MEDIA STATEMENT | SABC BROADCASTING FOR THE PEOPLE AS WE OBSERVE HUMAN RIGHTS DAY

Johannesburg – Tuesday, 21 March 2023 – Human Rights Day in South Africa is a day in which the country reflects on the events, which led to, and the day of the Sharpeville massacre, which took place on 21 March 1960.

It is a day of recognising and reaffirming that the human rights of all South African citizens are protected, as enshrined in the Constitution.

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), as a public service content provider advocates for public content that is easily accessible to all citizens despite their social and economic status or their geographical location #SABC EVERYWHERE, FOR EVERYONE. Therefore, as we reflect on our human rights as a country, it becomes clear that the mandate of a statutory institution such as the SABC is to play an active role in the realisation of democracy and ensuring that all citizens are offered equal opportunities to access important information as a human right.

During this period as we observe such a significant day in our history, it is important to focus on the role of the SABC as a public institution, which is bestowed with the responsibility to create awareness of human rights. The SABC comprises of 19 radio stations, which broadcasts in all South African languages, with the inclusion of Channel Africa, a service that is broadcast in several African countries. In addition, it has five (5) video entertainment (television) services, and a streaming service, SABC Plus that are dedicated to programming that is not only entertaining but geared towards realizing social justice.

Over the years, the SABC’s compelling programming has placed restoring human dignity as the focal point. This is through programming such as news items, which highlight the plight of women and children, poverty-stricken communities, and other societal challenges, which strip away the dignity of citizens. With such coverage, the SABC has been able to not only broadcast these events, but also attract people who are able to empower and assist those affected with credible information and possible solutions.

The SABC will continue to play a pivotal role in the protection and preservation of the human rights.

SABC’s Information Technology: Manager IT Security, Ms. Miso Thusi shares her experience from Wired4Women Tech Forum meeting

In the continued efforts to celebrate Women in Technology under the 2023 International Women’s Day theme DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender equality, this week the SABC’s Information Technology: Manager IT Security, Ms. Miso Thusi shares her experience from Wired4Women Tech Forum meeting held recently.

Miso, please share your experience from the Wired4Women Tech Forum meeting.

This forum has brought confidence in my technology journey as I’ve been involved in a variety of industry sectors. The forum has presented an opportunity for exposure to participate in CIO’s (Chief Information Offer) and CISO’s (Chief Information Security Officers) round tables discussions in developing, and shaping IT professionals, IT Decision Makers, and influencers. I was given an opportunity to participate in Zero Trust initiatives and learned to use sophisticated technologies to implement security strategies. In addition, I have engaged in the management of IT assets,  the importance of business competency centers to drive artificial intelligence in business decision-making by use of data/ information,  Cloud computing, management of IT policies, as well as governance, and ensuring compliance.

What were your key learnings from this experience?

Understanding diversity by acknowledging that people come from different ethnic backgrounds and mainly appreciating women in leadership roles as well as the need to support them in accelerating innovation in the technology industry.

Also, I now fully understand that to remain on top of your game it’s not about delegating only tasks to teams but it is about collaborating, guiding, and supporting them to ensure alignment for better results. In addition, it is important to be there when they reach key milestones. Again, when team members trust, and respect each other, they are likely to work effectively, support each other, and continue to deliver results in the event that challenges arise.

What are some of the benefits for you as a  Woman in Technology to be associated with a forum of this nature?

I have realized that I am an IT change maker, the enabler who is passionate about convergence technology and humanity. This forum has brought courage and empowered me to be disciplined, and results-driven as a leader. It has also motivated me to have strong ethics, and a natural aptitude to lead multicultural teams,  as well as not to grow alone but to empower women and young talent to pursue careers in technology.

International Women’s Day

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) joins the rest of the World in commemorating International Women’s Day. The Corporation aligns with the theme DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender equality” by celebrating remarkable women within the business who are making great strides in future proofing the SABC.  The Corporation celebrates Ms. Kwanele Msibi who is the Facilities Sales and Marketing Manager responsible for the cost-effective and efficient management of the strategies, policies, and procedures to increase market share and revenue generation for SABC’s Technology division.

International Women’s Day Q & A with SABC Head of Sports

On this International Women’s Day with the theme DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender equality”, we speak to the Head of Sports Ms. Keletso Totlhanyo to share more on how sports broadcasting has evolved in a digital era.

Happy International Women’s Day Keletso, in your view, what role do women in the workplace play in the global technology revolution?

In a space that is seen predominantly as male-dominated, the importance of leveling the playing field can never be overstated.  Showcase of talent for women to succeed in all areas in the corporate world is underpinned by the drive to contribute towards creating a space that will also motivate and inspire the future girl child.  Women don’t just do it for themselves, but understand the importance of inspiring the next generation.

Focusing on your line of duty, what is the impact of digital transformation in Sports broadcasting?

Sports content, just like news content, is about informing and educating audiences, wherever they are. Access, therefore, becomes paramount. Technology enables broadcasting, broadcasting empowers and informs the audiences. The world has become small due to the fast delivery of content. Our audiences have become so diversified, and this is reflected in the demographics of our audiences.  In their busy lives, access to content is key, at any time of their day and the emergence of technology that enables the delivery of sports content has become a crucial part of our business.

We have diversified our distribution platforms, to ensure we reach all our audiences, irrespective of where they are at any time of the day.

This is the reason we have worked very hard to ensure that our content reaches audiences on TV, Radio, and digitally. SABC Sport is not just a TV or Radio content driver, we are a multimedia content hub, always on!

What strategies has SABC Sport employed to ensure that the broadcasting of sports content on SABC channels remains relevant to the audiences’ needs with varying consumption patterns?

Digital distribution parallel to linear traditional content distribution has been key. We have multiplatform distribution channels, still linear but also high active in the digital distribution space via our OTT offering on sabcsport.com and SABC+.

Would you say the audiences have completely adapted to sports broadcasting in the tech era?

Without a shadow of a doubt, Sport content is a fast-moving consumer good, and it is important that we give our audiences the content they want and love, whenever they want it and wherever they are, with no barrier to entry.
