SABC EMBRACING THE SOCIAL OBJECTIVES OF BROADCASTING AND AMPLIFYING HUMAN RIGHTS

Broadcasting is one of the technical concepts linked very closely to technology. This concept’s fundamental and common perspective is entrenched in its capability of transmitting information through the airwaves. Equally, at the core of what this concept aims to achieve is creating a participatory space where ordinary citizens can express their views and participate in the public debate through multiple broadcasting platforms. A fundamental component of this drive is respect for human rights and the idea that an informed society is characterized by citizens who are aware of their surroundings and who they are.

Therefore, it has become increasingly important to put much emphasis on the social objectives of broadcasting. In practice, these objectives are realized every day, so it’s not surprising that broadcasters don’t place a lot of emphasis on their technology, but on the promises, they make to society. The SABC’s values of respect, trust, integrity and quality demonstrate the humanization of broadcasting. An integral part of broadcasting is the social aspect which plays a critical role in ensuring that the programs scheduled for citizens are of the highest quality and delivered with respect and integrity from a trusted source.

Thus, the SABC, as a public service content provider, advocates for public content that is easily accessible to all citizens no matter their socioeconomic status or geographical location. Therefore, as we reflect on human rights, it becomes clear that a statutory institution such as the SABC has an important mandate to contribute to democracy as well as to ensure that all citizens are offered equal opportunities to access important information as part of their human rights.

As we commemorate such an important day in our history, it is essential that attention is drawn to the role of the SABC as a public institution that is bestowed with the responsibility of creating and promoting awareness of human rights. The SABC is able to achieve this through its 19 radio stations, including Channel Africa, which is broadcast across several African countries, and five (5) video entertainment services and a streaming App,  SABC Plus. All these platforms are dedicated to programming that is not only entertaining but geared towards realizing social justice.

Restoring human dignity has been the focal point of the SABC’s compelling programming over the years, through news items that highlight the plight of women and children, poverty-stricken communities, and other societal challenges which strip away the dignity of citizens. In addition to drawing attention to these issues, the SABC has been successful in mobilizing resources to help individuals who are impacted.

The SABC commits itself to continue playing a pivotal role in the protection and preservation of human rights.

Mmoni Seapolelo is the SABC’s Group Executive for Corporate Affairs and Marketing (Acting)

MEDIA STATEMENT | SABC BROADCASTING FOR THE PEOPLE AS WE OBSERVE HUMAN RIGHTS DAY

Johannesburg – Tuesday, 21 March 2023 – Human Rights Day in South Africa is a day in which the country reflects on the events, which led to, and the day of the Sharpeville massacre, which took place on 21 March 1960.

It is a day of recognising and reaffirming that the human rights of all South African citizens are protected, as enshrined in the Constitution.

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), as a public service content provider advocates for public content that is easily accessible to all citizens despite their social and economic status or their geographical location #SABC EVERYWHERE, FOR EVERYONE. Therefore, as we reflect on our human rights as a country, it becomes clear that the mandate of a statutory institution such as the SABC is to play an active role in the realisation of democracy and ensuring that all citizens are offered equal opportunities to access important information as a human right.

During this period as we observe such a significant day in our history, it is important to focus on the role of the SABC as a public institution, which is bestowed with the responsibility to create awareness of human rights. The SABC comprises of 19 radio stations, which broadcasts in all South African languages, with the inclusion of Channel Africa, a service that is broadcast in several African countries. In addition, it has five (5) video entertainment (television) services, and a streaming service, SABC Plus that are dedicated to programming that is not only entertaining but geared towards realizing social justice.

Over the years, the SABC’s compelling programming has placed restoring human dignity as the focal point. This is through programming such as news items, which highlight the plight of women and children, poverty-stricken communities, and other societal challenges, which strip away the dignity of citizens. With such coverage, the SABC has been able to not only broadcast these events, but also attract people who are able to empower and assist those affected with credible information and possible solutions.

The SABC will continue to play a pivotal role in the protection and preservation of the human rights.

SABC’s Information Technology: Manager IT Security, Ms. Miso Thusi shares her experience from Wired4Women Tech Forum meeting

In the continued efforts to celebrate Women in Technology under the 2023 International Women’s Day theme DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender equality, this week the SABC’s Information Technology: Manager IT Security, Ms. Miso Thusi shares her experience from Wired4Women Tech Forum meeting held recently.

Miso, please share your experience from the Wired4Women Tech Forum meeting.

This forum has brought confidence in my technology journey as I’ve been involved in a variety of industry sectors. The forum has presented an opportunity for exposure to participate in CIO’s (Chief Information Offer) and CISO’s (Chief Information Security Officers) round tables discussions in developing, and shaping IT professionals, IT Decision Makers, and influencers. I was given an opportunity to participate in Zero Trust initiatives and learned to use sophisticated technologies to implement security strategies. In addition, I have engaged in the management of IT assets,  the importance of business competency centers to drive artificial intelligence in business decision-making by use of data/ information,  Cloud computing, management of IT policies, as well as governance, and ensuring compliance.

What were your key learnings from this experience?

Understanding diversity by acknowledging that people come from different ethnic backgrounds and mainly appreciating women in leadership roles as well as the need to support them in accelerating innovation in the technology industry.

Also, I now fully understand that to remain on top of your game it’s not about delegating only tasks to teams but it is about collaborating, guiding, and supporting them to ensure alignment for better results. In addition, it is important to be there when they reach key milestones. Again, when team members trust, and respect each other, they are likely to work effectively, support each other, and continue to deliver results in the event that challenges arise.

What are some of the benefits for you as a  Woman in Technology to be associated with a forum of this nature?

I have realized that I am an IT change maker, the enabler who is passionate about convergence technology and humanity. This forum has brought courage and empowered me to be disciplined, and results-driven as a leader. It has also motivated me to have strong ethics, and a natural aptitude to lead multicultural teams,  as well as not to grow alone but to empower women and young talent to pursue careers in technology.
