Win R10 000 for a 10-minute radio drama – in Afrikaans, English or isiXhosa

The first Classroom Radio Drama Competition is looking for works that will find resonance with learners between the ages of 13 and 16 that can be used in the classroom.

There is no prescribed theme, but the radio drama cannot be longer than 10 minutes. The competition is open to all South African writers and dramas can be submitted in either Afrikaans, English or isiXhosa. One winner in each language category will receive a prize of R10 000.

The closing date for submissions is Friday 14 January 2022 at 17:00 and winners will be announced on 28 January 2022. Only one entry per writer will be accepted.

This new competition is a collaboration between the WCED, RSG and the SU Woordfees.

Anina Lundie, Senior Curriculum Planner for the Creative Arts at the WCED, says:  “The Radio Drama Competition is part of a development project for teachers that will help build their capacities to use radio dramas as learning tools in the classroom. There is great value in using radio dramas in the Creative Arts courses as they help learners to use drama and build language skills in a creative and innovative manner. The WCED is enormously appreciative of this new opportunity to work with the SU Woordfees and RSG and to anchor this creative learning project in the realm of the professional radio drama industry.”

According to Kobus Burger, Senior Producer at RSG, the world of sound is now within everyone’s reach thanks to cell phones: “You can tell a story using nothing more than a device in your hand. RSG is excited to be working with the WCED and the Woordfees to give a new generation of storytellers a chance to tell their stories.”

Director of the SU Woordfees and WOW Project, Saartjie Botha, is also excited about this initiative: “The competition brings the performing arts and education so much closer to each other. We are privileged to be able to present this project with valued partners such as the WCED and RSG.”

MEDIA STATEMENT | SABC SPORT AND RED BULL PARTNER TO PRODUCE “SIYAMTHANDA” A THE 48-MINUTE TV SPECIAL TO DEBUTS ON SABC 2 AND RED BULL TV

Johannesburg – Thursday, 09 December 2021 – Siyamthanda, a TV special featuring some of the most potent recollections of South African National rugby captain, Siyamthanda “Siya” Kolisi’s earlier life and journey to the top, will air this Saturday, 11 December on SABC 2 at 18.30. The 48-minute TV special is a co-production between Red Bull Media House and SABC Sport that features people who have made a key contribution to his life.

The old adage “it takes a village”, has never been truer for someone like Siya Kolisi. Hailing from humble beginnings in Zwide, Eastern Cape, Siya, like most South Africans, had a rough start in life. In this production, he sits down with his close circle of friends and family to chat about his journey from the dusty streets of Zwide, Grey PE and to ultimately leading the Springbok team to victory in the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

The rare glimpse into Siya’s formative years is hosted by SABC sports presenter Thomas Mlambo, who spent the day with him, his close friends and family – including teammate Bongi Mbonambi, at ’50 on Gugs’ Shisanyama in Gugulethu.

“It was one of the most open and in some ways’ shocking’ interviews I’ve ever done because of what Siya reveals; I was genuinely shocked at how hard his life has been, and what he has overcome, ultimately I was ‘inspired,” says host, Thomas Mlambo.

The group reminisce and celebrate Siya’s journey to the top, unpacking some of their very first memories of him. His high school friend, Xolisa Velem, comments: “Siya was the smallest out of them, biggest ears, and his English was zero percent!”

His friends confirm that for the longest time, he always dreamed of playing in front of an audience and that they have had the pleasure of watching him achieve everything he told them he would achieve.

The special also touches on the more difficult elements of growing up in the township as well as the pressures of success and the responsibility he assumed when he took on his role as captain of the SA rugby team.

“I’m not perfect but, I can’t afford to disappoint society and the young children who look up to me. Representation is everything. I believe in shared leadership; I do not know everything. If I could change anything from when I was a kid, its mindset. That’s where you either make it or don’t make it,” says Siya, in the special.

It’s safe to say that the banter, laughter and touching moments in this production will leave viewers with a unique perspective about Siya.

To catch a glimpse of Siya Kolisi, tune into SABC 2 and Red Bull TV on 11 December 2021 at 18:30. You can also watch it on SABC Sport channel on DTT, Openview 124 and TelkomONE.

MEDIA STATEMENT | THE PUBLIC BROADCASTER REJECTS THE SCAPEGOATING OF SABC NEWS

Johannesburg – Thursday, 25 November 2021 – The SABC notes with concern the allegations by Minister Fikile Mbalula that the SABC’s coverage of the local government elections was to blame for low voter turnout and the ANC’s poor performance in several municipalities and metros.  Minister Mbalula has also personalised the matter by unacceptably singling out and criticising SABC Group Executive of News and Current Affairs, Ms Phathiswa Magopeni.

The ANC has not submitted any written evidence to substantiate these allegations. SABC management believes that SABC News covered these elections in line with its Editorial Policies and ICASA’s election regulations. SABC management therefore rejects Minister Mbalula’s allegations in the strongest terms.

The public broadcaster believes that this scapegoating of SABC News is unacceptable and disrespects the SABC’s role as an independent public broadcaster fulfilling its constitutional duty.

The SABC reiterates that should any political party have a complaint about any aspects of the SABC’s coverage they are encouraged to follow the established regulatory avenues available.

16 DAYS IS NOT ENOUGH…

One of the societal ills facing South Africa is the escalating scourge of violence against women and children. Twenty-seven (27) years into a constitution that is celebrated and held in high regard worldwide, it is regrettable that many voices in our society, particularly those of women, children, remain largely marginalized.

This is why the international ‘16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children Campaign’ is one of the important initiatives in the country. Taking place annually between 25 November and 10 December, the campaign is meant to challenge violence against women and children, whilst suggesting effective ways to eliminate it.

The SABC as a public service broadcaster with a duty to expose human rights violations including Gender-Based Violence (GBV) that infringes on the rights of women and children, continues to foster a collaborative effort in dealing with GBV. Through its informative public content and educational content offering, SABC constantly aims to contribute to social change by rallying all citizens to be the voices against the injustices women and children suffer in this country. In further support, the SABC will be running a campaign named “16 days is not enough” meant to extend the fight against the scourge of Gender-Based Violence beyond the dedicated 16 days.

This year’s theme #ItEndsWithYou uses the voices of men as advocates to speak out on gender-based violence while expanding a sense of accountability beyond the justice system. It seeks to enable a society where each citizen is responsible for teaching themselves and others the importance of protecting women and children.

Through  #ItEndsWithYou everyone is given an opportunity to be more than mere spectators, but instead, become a responsible citizen with the power to not only stop the violence but to make sure that it doesn’t transcend to the next generation.
