MEDIA STATEMENT |  SABC SPORT NOTES AN ERROR IN SCHEDULING THE BROADCAST OF WEEKLY GAMING SERIES

Johannesburg-Friday, 8 July 2022SABC Sport would like to apologise for the non-transmission of the weekly gaming series, VS Gaming, which was due to broadcast on Wednesday, 6 July 2022 at 17h30 on SABC 3.

The first episode will now be broadcast on Wednesday, 13 July 2022 at 18h00 on SABC 3. VS Gaming Weekly is a variety show that shines a spotlight on the gaming industry in South Africa. The weekly series which is hosted by Okay Wasabi and Sibu Mpanza will also be repeated on SABC 1 on Wednesdays at 23h00, Fridays at 22h00 on SABC Sport Channel and again on Saturdays at 11h00 on the same channel.

In episode 1 we talk to the first e-Diski Festival winner, we take a look back at what happened at the VS Gaming e-Diski Festival and comedian Mojak Lehoko takes a go at Cuphead.

MEDIAS STATEMENT | CHANNEL AFRICA LINE-UP CHANGES

Johannesburg – Thursday, 30 June 2022 – Channel Africa is excited to announce the launch of its brand-new sound, from 1 July 2022. The digital radio platform will introduce its new station imaging and launch a new line-up. The new line-up will introduce new and seasoned presenters from across Africa. Channel Africa which broadcasts in English, Chinyanja, Kiswahili, French and Portuguese languages is accessible across the continent on DSTV 802, Satellite PAS10 and Open View channel 628 and online.

The weekday, morning Current Affairs programme, Africa Rise & Shine, will be presented by radio host Aurielie Kalenga, followed by the dynamic duo Benjamin Moshatama and reality TV personality and radio host Palesa Tau on a show called On the Move. The station also introduces a weekday drive time show, The Upside, which will be co-hosted by seasoned journalists Zikhona Miso and Lloyd Nedohe with the 13h00 to 14h00 timeslot gaining an exclusive offering of all things business in the African Perspective with the show Business Africa hosted by Naledi Moleo.

The new weekday evening programme Afrika Tonight will be filled with robust and thought-provoking conversation and will be hosted by Khumbelo Munzehele. The station will wrap up the evening weekday programming with a broadcast from Buyalwayo in Zimbabwe through the music programme Afro Republic which has been moved to a new timeslot from midnight until 2am. The show continues with presenter Morris Touch.

The weekend line-up will be filled with back-to-back music and leisure with the return of the legendary Richard Nwaba who will continue to host African music show Africa in Song from midnight to 02h00 on Saturdays. Channel Africa also introduces a new flavour to its fresh line-up with TV presenter and Actress Gabisile Tshabalala presenting the music show, Africa Chart Toppers between 12h00 and 14h00 on Saturdays.

The Sport show, Africa @ Play will be presented by Neto Chemane with an innovative approach to sport across Africa. The Chinyanja language service continues with its well-loved show Malonje hosted by Stella Longwe on a Saturday and our Portuguese listeners will be kept dancing with Jacob Tivane on Ritmos Culture. The French language service introduces Mix Vibrations which offers Informal Knowledge Building content and presented by Jean-Jacques Dhybondo. The Kiswahili language service introduces the Current Affairs programme Darubini ya Afrika on weekdays between 17h00 to 18h00 which comprises of News and Current Affairs and will be presented by Ayam Shekifu.

Acting Channel Africa Business Manager Karabo Rangwetsi says, “This new programming line-up is versatile, inclusive and attractive, not only to the academics but to the ordinary people and youth as well. We have decided to have an inclusive programming approach that will be appealing to young adults, people at grass root level and more mature audiences. This is demonstrated in our Current Affairs and Informal Knowledge Building programmes, known as IKB, which aim to educate, inform and entertain”.

Rangwetsi concluded that “We offer fresh, original, informative, and thought-provoking programmes. IKB Programmes are unique in a sense that content curated for the offering requires specific research to suit designed programmes. This encourages producers to create original content, as topics reflect matters that deal with content from an African perspective, creating a narrative that Africans tell their own truth.”

MEDIA STATEMENT | UKHOZI FM PARTS WAYS WITH MR. SIBUSISO BUTHELEZI

Johannesburg – Wednesday, 29 June 2022– The Management of Ukhozi FM has decided to terminate the contract of Mr. Sibusiso Buthelezi as an Independent Contractor with immediate effect. This follows several allegations relating to Mr. Buthelezi’s business dealings that brought the organisation into disrepute.

Ukhozi FM management wishes to confirm that the station does not in any way have any relationship with Mr. Buthelezi’s private company Abombuso Investment.

Thembeka Zondo-Cele will continue as a stand-in presenter on Indumiso on Sundays between 09h00 and 12h00 until further notice.

MEDIA STATEMENT |  PUBLICATION OF FINAL REPORT ON GRIEVANCE LODGED AGAINST SABC CHAIRPERSON

Johannesburg – Thursday, 23 June 2022-On 8 April 2022, the SABC Board announced that it had adopted the Report of the Special Committee tasked with investigating allegations by former Group Executive: News and Current Affairs against the SABC Board Chairperson. The key findings were summarised and published but the main report was deemed private and confidential, particularly as it contained private and personal information of and about third parties.

On 31 May 2022, the SABC received a written request from SOS Support Public Broadcasting Coalition (SOS Coalition) to make the Report available on the basis that the findings were substantive and involved matters of public interest, including the alleged breach of the SABC’s Editorial Policies and how the matter was dealt with.

The Board applied its mind to SOS’s formal request to publish the Report, including the significant public interest in this matter, and the need to err on transparency and accountability, while protecting private, confidential, and personal information at the same time. Accordingly, the Board resolved to:

 

  • redact and remove information deemed to be private and confidential, including private and personal information of and about third parties; and

 

  • publish the redacted Report on the SABC’s website and make it available to the SOS Coalition.

 

While some information contained in the annexures appears to be in the public domain, the SABC has decided to publish the 47-page Special Committee Report and findings (redacted accordingly and excluding the annexures in order to protect private, confidential and personal information).

MEDIA STATEMENT |  LEIHLO LA SECHABA SCOOPS AN AWARD AT THE PanSALB MULTILINGUALISM AWARDS

Johannesburg – Friday, 17 June 2022-The South African Broadcasting Corporation’s television Current Affairs programme, Leihlo la Sechaba was recognised for its excellent programming at the Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB) awards on Wednesday, 15 June 2022. Leihlo La Sechaba secured first place position in the media category TV channel/programme.

The PanSALB awards are intended to honour organisations which have exceptionally delivered the mandate of promoting, protecting and preserving all South African official languages including Khoi, Nama and San languages as well as South African Sign language.

The accolade for Leihlo La Sechaba is a perfect fit as this programme broadcasts in Sesotho, Setswana and Sepedi with English subtitles every Monday at 20:30 to 21h00 on SABC 2. The programme is known for its extensive coverage of important issues affecting society including community development, politics, economics as well as other topics of interest for all South Africans.

The Group Executive for News and Current Affairs, Mr. Moshoeshoe Monare stated that “This award is yet another confirmation of the commitment of SABC news and current affairs division in ensuring that its programming caters for all citizens in all South African languages. We are encouraged that the great work that our Producers do is recognised in important institution such as the PanSALB. I would like to congratulate Leihlo La Sechaba team for this recognition”.

Johannesburg – Wednesday, 15 June 2022 – METRO FM would like to bid Ms. Dineo Ranaka farewell as she leaves the station to pursue other career opportunities outside the organisation.

 

Dineo has been with METRO FM for more than five years and her last day on-air is Friday, the 17th  of June 2022. She is a seasoned broadcaster and has been an integral part of the station’s success over the past couple of years and served with professionalism, resilience and enthusiasm.

 

METRO FM Business Unit Manager, Ms. Kina Nhlengethwa stated that “The station wishes Ms. Ranaka the best in her future endeavors. She has made a valuable contribution to the station and its listeners”.

MEDIA STATEMENT | THE SABC UNBLOCKS MS MAGOPENI AND INVESTIGATES FACTS SURROUNDING THE INCIDENT 

Johannesburg – Tuesday 31 May 2022 – The SABC has learnt that former Group Executive News, Ms. Phathiswa Magopeni, was last night blocked from the SABC News Twitter page. The SABC has no policy authorising any employee to block users from the public broadcaster’s accounts or platforms.

The SABC wishes to state for the record that it has not issued any directive to block Ms. Magopeni from its platforms. Upon learning of this unfortunate incident, the corporation immediately unblocked its former employee.

Furthermore, the SABC has reached out to Ms. Magopeni, explaining the facts of the matter and profusely apologised for this unfortunate incident.

The matter is currently under investigation as this account is managed by multiple individuals within the News Division. Following the investigation, the SABC will institute the consequence management process as this conduct is contrary to its policies.

MEDIA STATEMENT | SABC SPORT OFFERS ANOTHER SPECTACULAR WEEKEND LINE-UP

Johannesburg – Friday, 27 May 2022SABC Sport, with its promise to be the preferred home of sports, continues to deliver spectacular weekend sport line up of the highest standard. This weekend is filled with action packed sporting events covering the Basketball African League (BAL) matches, local and international football fixtures comprising of Hollywoodbets Super League, Nedbank Cup final, English Football League Championship and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Football and Rugby.

The weekend kicks off with the BAL Play-off match of Zamalek vs FAP at 18h00 live on SABC Sport on DTT channel 4 and Openview 124, followed by BAL Elevate Showcase at 21h30 accessible on the same channels. On the same day, SABC Sport will broadcast the much-anticipated Nedbank Cup final match between Mamelodi Sundowns and Marumo Gallants at 17h30 live on SABC 1 and SABC radio stations.

The Heritage Rugby offering will also allow viewers to indulge in the finest local talent on the rugby field as East Rand United take on North-West University on Saturday at 15h15 on SABC Sport on DTT Channel 4, Openview 124 and via TelkomONE. This anticipated encounter will also rebroadcast at 19h45 on SABC 2.

On Sunday, SABC Sport will offer a perfect double header starting with the PSL promotion-relegation playoff, where Cape Town All Stars will face the University of Pretoria on SABC 1 at 14h30. The English Championships playoff final match will also take the centre stage with Nottingham Forest FC and Huddersfield Town FC, battling it out to secure a place in the next season of the EPL. This match will broadcast on SABC Sport DTT channel 4, Openview 124 and will also be available on TelkomOne at 17h30. And if European football is your game, catch the repeat of this Saturday’s European Champion’s League final between Real Madrid and Liverpool on Liverpool’s LFC TV, on the SABC Sport Channel from 21h00.
