MEDIA STATEMENT | TRUFM ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF TRUTALENT FOR 2022

Gqeberha, Saturday, 28 October 2022 – The Eastern Cape’s biggest talent search competition, truTalent, has announced its winners for the 2022 Radio and DJ competitions.  Ntombozuko Bhalintuli triumphed in the Radio presenter category and Masonwabe Memane won the DJ category.

Both winners walk away with a one-year contract with the station, and will appear on shows to be announced in April 2023 when the station announces its new line-up. Each winner will receive a R10,000 cash prize and the voter who SMS’d the most  walks away with a R5,000 cash prize.  The competition, which has been running for 5 years, is an initiative by trufm, the biggest youth radio station in the Province. Trufm collaborated with Vodacom NXT LVL and local municipalities through various phases of the competition. A total of 88 897votes had been cast at the time of the announcement.

Ntombozuko Bhalintulo from East London finally succeeded after her second attempt. In 2019 she made it into the top two; the winner that year was Asive Sotashe who has been absorbed by the station. She made another attempt this year, auditioning in both East London and Queenstown to increase her chances of making it, which proved to be successful. She won the last leg of the competition with 5,400 votes,  and a total of 20 058 votes towards her overall success.

Masonwabe Memane, a club DJ in his own right, is a first-time entrant who wanted to increase his existing fanbase, skill and marketability. Memane has attended DJ workshops with trufm’s DJ Anda , which have assisted his development as a DJ.

This year’s truTalent competition received a total of 786 submissions following a two-year break between 2020 and 2021 due to Covid-19 restrictions. The station held audition in Peddie, Alice, Mdantsane, Ginsberg, Maclear, Queenstown, Mthatha, Bizana and Gqeberha. Eighteen finalists from each category were then selected to attend a radio workshop facilitated by industry experts in the field. The finalists got an opportunity to co-host with existing presenters to remain in the running for the top prize.

Business Manager, Loyiso Bala, said, “truTalent, opens up employment opportunities for the youth and further developing talented Eastern Capers.  Collaborations such as those with the local municipalities enabled even those who would not be able to travel for workshops to be included in the upskilling. Even the contestants that did not make it to the top, gained knowledge that they could use to try again next year.” Bala went on to congratulate the winners. “Not only did you guys put up a fight to showcase your talent, but you showed all of us that there is a marketer in each one of you”.

The station shared videos of the finalists sharing their experience of truTalent on their social media platforms @trufm on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

MEDIA STATEMENT | THE SABC WILL NOT BROADCAST THE UPCOMING SOWETO MARATHON DUE TO EXCLUSIVE SUPERSPORT RIGHTS DEAL

Johannesburg – Thursday, 27 October 2022 – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) will not broadcast the upcoming Soweto Marathon (the Race) on 6 November 2022 as planned. The Corporation was once again deprived of securing the broadcast rights due to the continuous anti-competitive behaviour of broadcasting competitor (SuperSport) and sports rights holder, Athletics South Africa (ASA). The parties negotiated for exclusive rights, which inhibits universal access to the Race as SuperSport’s broadcasting footprint and reach is limited.

This conduct has barred the SABC from competing effectively in the market of broadcasting premium sports events. Moreover, this behaviour has, in most instances, allowed competitors or private broadcasters to acquire sports rights, leaving the SABC with no choice but to sub-licensing the sports rights at exorbitant sub-licensing fees.

In July 2022, the SABC lodged a complaint with the Competition Commission to address the alleged anti-competitive conduct of competitors concerning sports events broadcasting and, in particular, the acquisition of exclusive Broadcast Rights to premium sports events in South Africa. The Corporation is optimistic that this process will be concluded and enable a fair and level ground for all.

The SABC remains committed to broadcasting sports of national interest.

MEDIA STATEMENT | SABC ANNUAL REPORT 2021/22 SHOWS IMPROVEMENT IN NET LOSSES

Johannesburg – Tuesday, 11 October 2022 – The South African Broadcasting Corporation’s (SABC) 2021/22 Annual Report was tabled in Parliament on Monday, 3 October 2022. The SABC’s net loss improved by R329 million (62%) compared to 2020/21, resulting in a R543 million (73%) improvement in net loss over five years (2018 – 2022). Revenue grew by R90m (2%) year-on-year as a result of the marginal increase in sponsorship revenue.

The improvement in net loss was negatively impacted by the acquisition of sport rights of the Olympics, which accounts for 58% (R122 million) of the reported net loss. If not for the Olympics investment – which is a public mandate obligation – the operating position would have resulted in a loss of R78m – an 85% improvement from the previous fiscal.

Despite the revenue increase in 2021/22, revenue levels previously achieved in 2020 have yet to be realised primarily due to audience share decline. As a result, advertising revenue was significantly under budget by 23%. Revenue is projected to grow in 2022/23 and several initiatives are in progress to mitigating  the risk.

Further to the above, the SABC’s public mandate continues to negatively affect the Corporation’s financial performance with an average annual cost of R1,5 billion.

Brand awareness campaigns strengthened the TV Licence brand and contributed to enhanced TV licence collections by R26,6 million to a total of R815,1 million. However, the evasion rate remains high, at about 81.7%.

Cash on hand at year-end 2021/22 was R1,18bn with R917m as the remainder of the recapitalisation funding, ringfenced for CAPEX, and content acquisition.

The Corporation’s Audit Opinion remained ‘Qualified with Findings’. Only one qualification area (from six years ago) remains. It relates to the completeness of the Irregular Expenditure register, due to historical opening balances as at 1 April 2020.

Over the past 5 years, the Corporation has consistently reduced its year-on-year expenditure reported as irregular due to non-compliance to policies and procedures.

The ability of the Corporation to maintain its going concern status remains an area of concern and ongoing monitoring. The underperformance in revenue generation put pressure on liquidity in the short-term, but the Corporation continues to pursue several initiatives to manage day-to-day working capital and sustainably reduce the risk.

The Corporation has received several national and international accolades. These achievements and awards presented to News, Video Entertainment (TV) and Radio, are a recognition of the SABC’s excellence in fulfilling its public mandate of informing, educating and entertaining South Africans.

THE ROLE OF THE PUBLIC BROADCASTER IN HERITAGE PRESERVATION

The issue of heritage in the context of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is one that is often thought-provoking, especially when one considers the rich history of the SABC and the role the public broadcaster has played in shaping narratives and perspectives that have impacted society since its inception through an Act of Parliament in 1936.

The SABC’s mission is to inform, educate, and entertain the public through its radio, video, and digital platforms. One can only imagine how challenging it is for an organization to fulfill such a mandate in a country as diverse as South Africa (SA). With its content and programming, the SABC has done an impeccable job in this regard, both on radio and on its video entertainment platforms. But where does one even begin to understand and decipher the legacy and influence that the SABC has had in creating a cultural identity in the post-democratic SA by ensuring that there is an appreciation and representation of diverse voices across the length and breadth of SA?

From a video entertainment perspective, there are several programmes and shows that demonstrate the SABC’s significant role in preserving and promoting cultural heritage from a language and artistic point of view. Of the many programs to choose from, including Pasella, 7 de Laan, Ezodumo, Isidingo, Yizo Yizo, Generations, and many others, Muvhango is one of the SABC’s television programs that has carried appeal and relevance over the years.  This is because prior to the attainment of freedom and the dawn of democracy in 1994, television programs that catered for indigenous languages were broadcast mainly in the Nguni (namely IsiZulu and IsiXhosa) or Sotho (namely Setswana, Sepedi, and SeSotho) language groups.

This meant that the majority of South Africans had little exposure to the languages in the northern region now known as Limpopo Province. Thus, the broadcasting of Muvhango became a historic turning point in the acceptance of diversity and inclusivity in the context of the marginalized, where all languages and cultures are considered, as stated in the Constitution.

SABC’s radio portfolio consists of 19 renowned radio stations. They cater to all 11 of SA’s official languages, including the ! Xu and Khwe which is spoken mainly in the Northern Cape, through its X K FM radio station. The commitment of the public broadcaster to promote and advance the preservation of SA’s heritage agenda is further strengthened in this environment. The African-language radio stations have the highest exclusive listenership, led by Ukhozi FM with approximately 7,813,000 million listeners. Together they have a listenership of about 23,851,000 million, another indication of the significant role SABC plays in ensuring that the citizenry is served in the language of their choice, further contributing to their continued existence.

The world is changing at breakneck speed, where globalization and the influence of technology have welded societies and communities together, making it easier and more plausible to learn, explore, inform, and interact with individuals from various backgrounds and cultures. One can infer that this has led or contributed immensely to the dominance of western culture over the rest of the world, especially in developing countries. Consequently, this can, and to some degree has had a negative impact on cultural heritage and its overall importance, in the context of identity inSA.

It is therefore imperative that the public broadcaster continues to fulfill its mandate and contribute to furthering the preservation and, in some cases, restoration of SA’s cultural heritage through meaningful partnerships with credible and reputable like-minded organizations to support initiatives and activities that directly relate to cultural heritage.
