MEDIA STATEMENT | LESEDI FM NEW LINE UP GIVES THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT

Bloemfontein – Monday, 28 March 2022 – SABC’s Lesedi FM commands a strong listenership of 4,081 million and will launch its new 2022/23 line-up on 1 April 2022. The station lives up to its slogan, Ke Mollelwa and will with the new line-up turn things around and demonstrate its commitment to growth for both listenership and revenue by taking the broadcasting game to the next level, sure to be noticed and admired by all.

The morning drive show appropriately renamed ’Thakgoha Morning Drive’ will broadcast from 06h00– 09h00, with two exciting new additions; producer Thabang Morobane and Rorisang Thandekiso, who will co-host the Thursday and Friday show with Seipati “Twasa” Seoke. Thabang brings his years of expertise and talent, tapping into the listeners main vein and the multi-talented Rorisang brings millennials’ global mindset to an already empowering show that succeeds at maintaining listeners positive energy with powerful appealing content.  Seipati ‘Twasa’ Seoke and Nyakallo “Ba2cada” Leine will continue to host the show, Mondays to– Wednesdays. Ba2cada will then change gears into the weekend by re-claiming the popular programme “Tse Ratwang” 09h00 – 12h00 for the Station’s Top 30 charts show.

There is only one thing better than a well-loved original, a remix that makes the circle bigger, and no one understands this mission better than Mannehileng Letuka, who is joining the station to co-host with the ever-green Tholoana Moletsane on “Itlhabolle” formerly known as Mathemalodi, 09h00 -12h00. The duo will offer a progressive take on issues that bridge the age and gender gap.

12h30 -15h00, Jwale Ke Nako, presented by the legendary Thuso Motaung, will see the introduction of the reliable electric guitar; Kagiso Sebudi. KG as he is affectionately known, joins “Jwale Ke Nako” as the show producer enhancing the drive and energy of the show.

Whilst the afternoon drive presenters will remain the same dynamic team that makes Sesotho fashionable, the name will change to “Rea Thella Afternoon Drive Show” to reflect the programs intention to outsmart those who merely want to keep up with the Joneses. Up to the task, this trio of aces; Thabo, Dikeledi and DK will join hands with the new producer, Jonito Soke to take over the air waves and leave the competition in the dust.

For depth and elevation, Phakisi Mokoena re-joins the station to co-host with Ntsoaki Motloung on “Re Mmoho”, Monday – Wednesday the 20h00 to 00h00 time slot to keep listeners in touch with the evolution of the Basotho culture through a new book review feature intended to connect the audience to Sesotho literature, storytelling and those archiving cultural and African practices in black and white for our descendants to inherit.

Dr. Lehlohonolo Motake will burn the weekend midnight oil during “Dia Roropa”, Saturdays to– Sundays from 00h00 – 02h00. Dr Motake is young, vibrant and his love for the Sesotho language and culture is infectious. He is just the right individual to introduce the midnight gang to the vibe only he can maintain, Beke le Beke.

“Lesedi FM’s ultimate purpose is to be present everywhere, at any time to everyone. A hybrid brand in the digital age that thrives to be consumer-centric with compelling offerings; on-air, online and easily accessible through untapped channels” concluded the Business Manager Mamontha Motaung.

MEDIA STATEMENT | MOTSWEDING FM RELEASES 2022/23 LINE-UP

Mahikeng – Monday, 28 March 2022 – In celebrating 60 years of broadcasting excellence, the South African Broadcasting Corporation’s (SABC) radio station, Motsweding FM has seen it befitting to add more flavour to its current line-up. The line-up changes implemented will continue to preserve and protect language usage, as the station is a key custodian of the Setswana language and culture. Motsweding FM commands over 3 million listeners and with the new line-up, aims to grow both listener and revenue through developmental, innovative and compelling content.

Motsweding FM’s breakfast show, which is broadcast from 06h00-09h00 Monday to Friday, will see a new team anchoring the show. Legendary award-winning radio broadcaster Douglas “D Mos” Mosadi, who is no stranger to Motsweding FM as he previously served the radio station for 17 years makes his return with this slot. “D Mos” has managed to rebrand himself over the years and remains a well-respected Setswana personality, popular on social media.

Stella Sebalo will join D Mos as co-host. She brings a wealth of experience in quality output of Setswana content and she also enjoys a wide social media following through her involvement in community radio stations and as a language activist. The cherry on top is the addition of seasoned award-winning content producer, Essence Maumakwe. His content production experience and creativity will add to what is going to become the best breakfast show in public broadcasting.

The 09h00-12h00 and 12h00-15h00 shows, will now be presented by Mokopi Molebatsi and Amon Mokoena respectively. Amon Mokoena brings with him a plethora of skills that are much needed for daytime radio. Mokopi Molebatsi is a well-rounded broadcaster, having worked for community, PBS and commercial radio stations. She is one of the few female Setswana Broadcasters of the current generation. Her love for culture, language, and music will complement the show.

Lindiwe Modise “Mama Lindi” will move to the 02h00 to 05h00 slot, Monday to Friday whose content will be more developmental and inspirational in nature.

MEDIA STATEMENT | ON ANALOGUE SWITCH OFF

Johannesburg – Friday 25 March 2022. The SABC Board has noted public concerns about the Analogue Switch Off deadline of 31 March 2022 and its potential impact on the public and all  the public broadcaster’s stakeholders.

For more than a decade now, the SABC has been supporting the Digital Migration policy and programme of the national government and our position remains unchanged. The benefits of digital television are multiple. Among others, digital television will enhance the quality of our offerings, expand our competitive advantage, and empower the public with more content variety and choices.

As we approach the 31 March 2022 ASO deadline, we remain hopeful that our engagement with Shareholder Representative, the Minister of Communication and Digital Technologies, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, will yield favourable outcomes, including the extension of the ASO timetable. The SABC believes that the extension of the ASO timetable will ensure that no South African is left behind or denied access to Free-To-Air television and public television services.

The plan to switch off all ATV transmitters by 31 March 2022, despite the slow progress of STB registrations and installations, presents an unsustainable risk to the rights of millions of indigent households, as well as the Corporation’s Turnaround Plan. A premature switch-off will deprive millions of people from important public television services.

The four provinces designated for switch off on 31 March 2022 comprise 68% of South Africa’s population. As at February 2022 only 165,000 STBS out of the 2.9m indigent households (5.7%) had been installed in the four outstanding provinces. This number is simply too low for the SABC’s ATV services to be switched off in the four largest provinces, at this stage.

The SABC engages with the Digital Migration Project mindful of its inescapable constitutional and legal obligations to the people of South Africa. The corporation will do everything possible within the Intergovernmental Relations Framework and the law to safeguard its interests and protect the rights of every citizen to access public television services.

The SABC wants to reassure the public that it will continue engaging with the Minister to ensure the ASO timetable is extended.
