Deal or No Deal, which has entertained and enchanted audiences across more than fifty countries, will be broadcast on SABC 1, Monday to Friday, in prime time from 7:30 pm to 8 pm starting on the 6th of March 2023, and then again, the following day on S3, Mondays to Friday at 5:30 pm. Deal or No Deal is a thrilling, once-in-a lifetime game of chance where contestants select one of twenty sealed boxes. Each box contains a cash amount, ranging from R1 to R250 000. As the game unfolds, and as the cash values of the boxes are revealed, the contestant is offered an amount in exchange for their box by the show’s Banker. Round after round, Katlego, the show host, will ask the contestant to decide whether to take the Banker’s deal or not; thus, creating a rapture of enthusiastic encouragement and nail-biting nerves for both contestants and viewers.

Lala Tuku continues, “We are delighted to have the ever-popular and vivacious Katlego Maboe as the host of South Africa’s Deal or No Deal. Katlego is a multi-award-winning television personality and highly respected presenter. We needed an all-rounded host for this very special show, and we are convinced that he has the requisite flair and finesse, and the generosity of spirit to ensure that

Deal or No Deal becomes an essential, not to be missed, part of the daily life of South Africans across the nation. His charisma and compassion will ensure that each episode of Deal or No Deal is an emotive, highly charged journey for both contestant and viewers.”

Each episode of Deal or No Deal will see tears all-round as contestants share with the viewers how they will use their winnings; for that special first-time-ever international trip, for the university fees for that especially bright young niece who has always yearned to be a doctor, for that long awaited dream of upgrading the kitchen, and so much more.

Show viewers and families across the nation will ride an emotional roller-coaster as contestants play for the prize, in this high energy, high drama, high stakes game. Viewers will share in the joy as dreams of ordinary South Africans come true before their very eyes. South Africa will cheer-on as the nation’s top celebrities also play for their favourite charities, in the Deal or No Deal’s extravaganza of opportunity.

The show which will launch on SABC 1 on 6 March 2023, will bring a much needed ray of sunshine to the nation, as the dreams of everyday citizens come true in an instant and in real-time. SABC 1 HITS 1 BILLION IMPRESSIONS

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC)’s biggest commercial tv station, SABC 1, is pleased to announce that they’ve garnered over One Billion Social Media Impressions with their #SABC1siON campaign!

For their Summer campaign, SABC 1 launched a campaign with the strap-line, SABC 1 siON to promote their new summer content. This was launched through a TVC on the channel as well as other promotional material, including digital content posted on all the channel’s social media platforms. This campaign has been a tremendous success, especially on their digital platforms where their numbers have skyrocketed.

For the first time ever, SABC 1 has accumulated over 1 Billion Impressions across all social media platforms. This means people saw the #SABC1siON posts over a billion times between September 2022 and February 2023.

Derived from the popular youth terminology of ‘putting someone on’,  the #SABC1siON strap-line was a vibrant and youth-centric approach to engage with SABC 1 viewers. The purpose of which was to reinvigorate the brand and reposition SABC 1 as the channel that is forever ‘switched on’ to the culture, the latest talent, Mzansi content, social media trends etc. and will continue to ‘put people on’ offering the best local video entertainment.

To support the TV efforts in communicating this message as well as promoting SABC 1’s summer content, a digital strategy was conceived and the hashtag #SABC1siON was created to accompany all this content. This has included a nationwide Hip-hop meets AmaPiano competition termed the #SABC1siON Challenge; through this campaign, some of Mzansi’s favourite rappers got involved in creating viral Tik Tok videos and Instagram reels to a SABC 1 beat – among these were Stogie T, Gigi Lamayne, Rouge, Holy Alpha and Nomfundo Yekani. Through this competition ,up-and-coming musicians got involved and were awarded an opportunity to rub shoulders with their idols at the SA Hip Hop Awards held in December 2022. This competition was just one part of the puzzle leading up to the major success SABC 1’s digital platforms have enjoyed.

During this period, social media posts from the SABC 1 platforms reached well over 15 Million social media users, with an engagement rate of over 3,6 million. These are incredible numbers and a wonderful feat for a campaign that has only been running a little over four months.

Blueprint Group conceptualized the social media campaign through their social media agency Bluecloud AI. “One Billion Impressions is a massive accomplishment for any campaign. This mammoth achievement shows just how dynamic the SABC 1 digital content is and just how much potential still exists within SABC 1’s video entertainment offering. Through our digital strategy, we aimed at getting the viewers to co-create content with SABC 1 we understood that the modern viewer consumes tv in a multi-screen environment where social media commentary now also becomes factored in.  Our digital strategy involved curating SABC 1 content specially developed with digital platforms in mind. This involved taking moments from shows like – Too hot to be single (#THTBS), Fooled by Love (#FBL), Uzalo & Skeem Saam and a variety of other shows, and creating viral video clips, GIF’s, Meme’s, polls and engaging posts that would get the public watching the SABC 1 shows and engaging with the channel on digital platforms at the same time. Through-out this campaign period the #SABC1siOn has trended a number of times and the majority of the reach has been organic. We are very proud of this achievement and the team behind it. – Weza Matomane- MD of Bluecloud AI. X

“1 Billion impressions from a campaign launched in September is no small feast and a true testament that SABC is serious about its digital strategy and staying in tune with viewers. SABC 1 is a dominant brand in South Africa on multiple platforms, not just a linear channel evidently. As a youth channel which serves the youth, this 1 billion mark is a milestone that confirms that SABC 1 is indeed for SA’s youth who are multi-screen consumers of content, and we are grateful for their continued support. More digital initiatives are coming from SABC this year, so this is just the beginning. Thank you to our partners BluePrint Group AI for the work and the brand team at SABC 1 for their hard work and dedication. SABC 1 SiOn!!” Dichaba Phalatse, Acting Head of Marketing. Moving forward, he says they intend to increase their digital content offerings further and ensure even more engagement with viewers and captivate them on SABC social platforms.

GOOD HOPE FM REVEALS ITS BRAND-NEW LOOK

Cape Town, Monday, 13 February 2023 – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC)
radio station, Good Hope FM, celebrated World Radio Day by unveiling its new brand identity
– sporting a fresh new logo, bold new colors and a tagline befitting of the station that has
connected with Cape Town listeners since 1965.

The station unveiled a refreshed logo driven by engagements with staff, management and
other media experts. The goal was to identify the experiences, concerns, hopes and dreams
that resonate with audiences, and to connect them with a station that is not only refreshing,
distinct, relevant, appealing and vibey, but also offers a substance that is solid and meaningful.
Sewela Sebola, Good Hope FM’s Marketing Manager says “Good Hope FM is a station for
those who are set on asserting their own individuality, embracing and expressing their true,
authentic selves in an inclusive and inspiring space where everyone belongs. The station
welcomes anyone, from high school and university students, to young working professionals,
and those who are young at heart. Our purpose statement is clear cut: To inspire belonging
within its community of listeners. A community of unique individuals, united in their diversity
through a shared sense of belonging”.

Good Hope FM’s Business Manager, JD Mostert commented, “In recognising our listeners’
uniqueness and originality, the Good Hope FM and Joe Public team drew parallels between
the station and them. We are a station with our own, original flavour – elevating, evolving
and boldly owning our originality, while proudly representing our community of listeners
through music, content and activities that inform, entertain, educate, engage, connect,
inspire, uplift and empower people across Cape Town.”
These core values, purpose and tagline underpin Good Hope FM’s new logo, a unique,
distinctive monogram which combines the G for ‘Good’ and H for ‘Hope’ into an impactful,
circular design – one that will be turned into a viewfinder in some of the station’s visual
elements, placing the very community it celebrates at the heart of the brand, capturing the
rhythm and originality of the city and community.

Sebola added, “In addition, the untamed and unapologetic colour palette showcases Good
Hope FM as the authentic, aspirational and contemporary lifestyle platform, that not only
bravely represents its audience, but inspires people far beyond the station itself.
Mostert concluded, “this is an exciting new chapter for Good Hope FM, but it’s about more
than just changing the look and feel, it’s refreshing and stepping up every element of our game
and bettering our offering to listeners and clients even further by reminding us all who we are
and the massive impact we make. It’s a conviction that says ‘No one can do it quite like we
can. No one gets the beat quite like we do. Because no one does originality quite like an
original’.”

In celebrating its new look with listeners, Good Hope FM will be hosting a Cape Town’s Original
party on Friday, 17 February from 9 p.m., with a LIVE broadcast from Hanover Street nightclub
at Grand West. The event will feature TwinzSpin’s Jade and Shad, Dr Jules and Jason Spikes.

SABC CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL MOTHER LANGAUGE DAY AND REAFFIRMS ITS COMMITMENT TO PROMOTING SOUTH AFRICAN INDIGINOUS LANGUAGES

The year 2023, marks 24 years since International Mother Language Day was proclaimed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1999, and declared a day to officially recognize the importance of mother tongues, throughout the world. 21 February 2000, was the first official International Mother Language Day. The theme for this year’s International Mother Language Day is “Multilingual education – a necessity to transform education”.

According to the United Nations website, “Today there is growing awareness that languages play a vital role in development, in ensuring cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue, but also in strengthening co-operation and attaining quality education for all, in building inclusive knowledge societies and preserving cultural heritage, and in mobilizing political will for applying the benefits of science and technology to sustainable development” https://www.un.org/en/observances/mother-language-day.

The celebration and promotion of the mother language, has always been central to the mandate and role that the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) plays in our society.

With 11 official languages, the SABC has continuously worked towards ensuring that these languages are represented in its various radio and television programming.

With a radio portfolio of 19 radio stations, every official language has a dedicated radio service. These services are instrumental in delivering news and information, whether educative or entertainment driven, in the language of choice for our audiences.

The recent announcement by the public service broadcaster to extend its news and current affairs in African languages in April 2023, with the launch of its first ever 24-hour news channel in African languages, that will also offer an extensive coverage of parliamentary proceedings, is a testament of the commitment by the SABC, to further advance and promote mother tongue languages.

This public news service will be an added platform, to serve mainly communities that are not necessarily reached by mainstream commercial South African media. These are millions of viewers who wait until evening, to watch less than half an hour bulletins in their own languages. With SABC News having decades of experience in public broadcasting in indigenous languages, the public broadcaster is up to the task of further fulfilling its constitutional mandate of delivering news and current affairs content that reflects the diverse South African society. The imminent launch of this channel reinforces the SABC’s pivotal role in facilitating social cohesion, by providing a wide range of programming that caters for the needs of the entire society, in this instance, language being a driving force.

According to section 8 (c) of the SABC Charter, “The Corporation must develop a Code of Practice that ensures that the services and the personnel comply with the constitutional requirement of equitable treatment of all official languages.” This means the public broadcaster has a responsibility to ensure that all South African languages are treated equitably, in its radio and television programming/content.

Furthermore, the SABC’s language policy on content, as contained in its Editorial Policy, is explicit by stating, “As South Africa’s public service media, the SABC embraces its constitutional duty to treat all official languages equitably, and with equal respect. The Constitution also recognizes the need to promote South African Sign Language and the Khoi, Nama and San languages. The SABC is conscious of its role in facilitating the fulfilment of language rights of individuals and communities.

The introduction of the Language Policy on Content further states that “The SABC recognises that:

6.1.1 freedom of expression can be realised fully only when every South African can inform and be informed in their language of choice. Access to meaningful information also empowers South Africans to participate effectively in every facet of society.

6.1.2 language plays a crucial role in promoting and attaining the goals of strengthening democracy, and protecting and developing the country’s uniquely diverse cultures.

6.1.3 development and usage of languages is closely linked to the development of culture and identity.

6.1.4 owing to its virtual universal accessibility and use, the SABC has a unique responsibility to provide content offerings that promote the development of a national identity while supporting the advancement of languages and cultures.

The SABC reiterates its commitment to fulfil its constitutional mandate of delivering content that reflects the diverse South African society it serves, and will continue to utilize language as a key tool in delivering to the millions of South Africans who rely on SABC radio and television services for news and information.
