Genre Editorial Guide – SABC Education

SABC Education is a multi-focused genre with sub-units ranging from ECD; Twins, Teens and Youth; Formal; Public information and social development. The output by genre is driven by multiple factors such as the position of the channels, statutory frameworks viz. Curriculum, National Development Plan (NDP), Sustainable Development Goals and other key global frameworks aligned to the needs of the country.   The identity of programs produced by SABC education is informed and shaped by the following focal areas (DNA strand):  Ubuntu, ethics and values; health and wellbeing; literacy, numeracy and skills; agriculture and environment; civic, democracy and others.  Crucial to this guide is that each program produced for SABC Education must live beyond TV, living behind imprints for social media support, and outreach.

SABC Education is an award-winning content genre situated at content hub within the SABC.  The genre supplies programmes to SABC 1,2 & 3. It dabbles in a plethora of content formats for all audiences from babies to our senior citizens. SABC Education delivers content across platforms viz. television, radio, digital and outreach. The particular sub-genres are Children, Formal Education, Tweens and Youth Development and Public Information and Social Development.

The leading editorial line of SABC Education supports lifelong learning. This is achieved through programs that are designed to meet educational objectives driving high impact outcomes. All of this ultimately contributing to nation-building.

The key focus areas are: Ubuntu, ethics and values; health and wellbeing; literacy, numeracy and skills; agriculture and environment; civic, democracy and others.  All programmes are frame worked by the National Educational Curriculum, National Development Plan (NDP), United Nations Sustainable Development Goals including global frameworks aligned to the needs of the country.

Crucial to this editorial guide is that the content lives beyond television through digital media and outreach initiatives.

As part of content acquisition it is important every concept received by SABC Education that it undergoes a commissioning cycle where it will evaluated by the commissioning team. It is important that the concept submitted strongly represent the following assertions:  clear educational values and outcomes, visible format, persuasive concept, authenticity, adaptability and appeal to audiences, alignment to national priorities while not ignoring the ability of the concept to appeal for TV. There is a standard threshold set by the genre that will decide and indicate whether the concept submitted makes it another stage of the cycle, which is a pitching session.

SABC TO HOLD MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR MR. MOKOETLE

Johannesburg, Monday, 18 November 2019– The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) invites the colleagues and friends of the former Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the SABC, Mr. Solly Mokoetle to celebrate his life following his passing  on Friday, 15 November 2019.

Fully Funded Programmes (FFPs)

The objective of this Policy is to govern the parameters and processes for Fully Funded Programmes (FFP’s) to be broadcast on SABC Platforms. FFP’s include Advertiser Funded Programmes (AFP’s) and Donor Funded Programmes (DFP’s). The purposes of FFP’s in the SABC are to

  1. Provide cash saving
  2. Generate revenue and/or
  3. Provide editorially guided content to the SABC Platforms at no cost to the SABC.

How to submit your proposal

SABC will receive only submitted material that is embodied in written form in hard copy. Couriered, mailed, facsimiles and e-mail submissions will not be considered.

SABC will consider your submission only at your request and only with your assurance that to the best of your knowledge you are the sole originator of the idea and that you have the legal right to submit it to SABC for evaluation.

Technical Standards for HD TV

The primary delivery method will be a broadcast media MXF file as specified in the Broadcast HD formats that follows. Only where delivery mechanisms do not allow broadcast media file delivery, exceptions can be made and must clearly be specified in the commissioning brief.
