THE SABC SENDS CONDOLENCES TO THE MASHEGO FAMILY

Johannesburg – Tuesday, 07 April 2020 – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) would like to send its condolences to the Mashego family following the passing of Vinolia Mashego. ‘V-Mash’, as she was affectionately known, co-hosted the highly popular music variety show, Jam Alley from 1994-2001.

THE SABC APPOINTS MR. MERLIN NAICKER AS THE GROUP EXECUTIVE FOR TELEVISION

Johannesburg, Thursday, 02 April 2020- The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Merlin Naicker as the GE: Television from 1 April 2020. Mr. Naicker brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the SABC and he holds various qualifications including an MBA (Oxford Brookes), BSC Hons – Digital Technology, Design & Innovation (DIT) and a Certificate in Advanced Broadcast Law (Wits Law).

METRO FM ANNOUNCES 2020 LINE-UP

Johannesburg – Tuesday 31 March 2020 – The biggest commercial radio station in South Africa, METRO FM introduces its 2020 line-up on Wednesday April 01, 2020.

To retain its position as the coolest radio station in the country, METRO FM, which is one of the South African Broadcasting Corporation’s (SABC) Public Broadcasting Commercial (PBC) radio stations, will continue to focus on ensuring delivery of quality and cutting-edge content and services. Based on the 2019 successes, that saw the station delivering its highest audience figures in four (4) years, the station plans to maintain the current line-up with a few minor additions.

UKHOZI FM EXTENDS ITS PROGRAMMING ON TERM 1 MATRIC REVISION CONTENT

Durban – Tuesday 31 March 2020 – The South African Broadcasting Corporation’s (SABC) biggest radio station, Ukhozi FM is pleased to announce that it has extended its Term 1 matric revision classes from one slot to three slots. The original 21h00 – 22h00 slot will now be supported by two new slots between  09h00 – 09h30 and 15h00 – 15h30.  This initiative forms part of Ukhozi FM’s efforts to intensify the broadcast of educational programmes in response to the lockdown which has resulted in students not being able to attend their normal classes.

ALIGNMENT OF SHOWS TO MOTSWEDING FM RADIO LINE-UP

Johannesburg – Monday, 30 March 2020 – Motsweding FM management continues to re-evaluate the brand’s offering to put Motsweding FM in a better spot to be more relevant to the station’s audience and clients.  Underscoring the need to stay relevant, competitive and to reflect the multifaceted interests of all generations, Motsweding FM will be refreshing its weekday and weekend line-up from 01 April 2020. The new line –up necessitates stronger emphasis on cultural values, identity, preserving and development of Setswana language.

SABC RADIO EXPANDS ACCESS TO NEWS AND INFORMATION AMID COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Johannesburg – Saturday, 28 March 2020 – The South Africa Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) would like to further announce that all its African Language Stations (ALS), as well as its English radio stations, SAFM and Radio 2000 will be expanding their News and Current Affairs coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic with immediate effect. All relevant media briefings will be broadcast live on SABC radio.

SABC BOARD RESPONSE TO BEMAWU LETTER

Johannesburg-Sunday, 29 March 2020 The Board of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has noted with deep concern allegations on crucial issues raised by the union, BEMAWU, in a letter addressed to the SABC Group Executive, Madoda Mxakwe, but shared widely in the public space today before there was an opportunity to respond.

UKHOZI FM TO ANNOUNCE RESULTS OF ‘INGOMA EHLUKANISA UNYAKA’ CAMPAIGN

MEDIA STATEMENT

Johannesburg – Wednesday 11 March 2020 – The South African Broadcasting Corporation SOC Ltd (SABC) is pleased to announce that its radio station Ukhozi fm will finally be revealing the results of its Ingoma Ehlukanisa Unyaka campaign.

On the 31st of December 2019, the campaign was brought to an abrupt halt by a court interdict through an application brought against the SABC. The court application was subsequently withdrawn in January 2020.

Following the abandoned court application, it was important for Ukhozi fm to honor our trusted brand amongst listeners, by delivering on the promise to announce the results, as has been done for decades.

On Friday the 13th of March 2020, from 15:00-18:00, the station will be recreating ‘New Year’s Eve, with the actual Top 10 songs, as voted for by listeners and audited by external auditors, being played on a special edition of the afternoon drive show.

This special programme will be hosted by Ukhozi fm presenters Tshatha and Selby, who were the crossover hosts on the 31st of December 2019. Listeners can look forward to exciting spot giveaways, as the station builds up to the most anticipated announcement of 2020.The winning entry, as voted for by Ukhozi fm listeners will receive R50 000; the runner up will receive R30 000 and the third place recipient will receive R20 000.

The winning artist will also get bragging rights for the rest of the year and the title of having the top song on Ukhozi fm for 2019, will forever be written in Ukhozi fm’s history books.

Over the years, Ukhozi fm has built a strong following through its annual New Year’s Eve campaign Ingoma Ehlukanisa Unyaka. Every year the majority of South Africans, no matter where in the country or how old they are, stop everything they are doing to tune into Ukhozi fm to find out the crossover song which takes South Africans from one year into the next. This song is preceded by a countdown starting from the number 10 song.

 

The mechanics of the campaign are as follows:

 

  1. The Top 10 is compiled. These songs are a combination of staff votes; listener nominations and the most played songs from the station play out system;
  2. The Top 10 is released on-air and on digital platforms for listeners to vote for their favourite via the station sms line. This is a 2 week process;
  3. On the 31st of December, the Top 10 is played between 11pm and midnight when the winning song is announced.
