THE SABC’S TRANSFORMATION JOURNEY- WHEN TRANSFORMATION IS PRIORITISED, REAL AND SUSTAINABLE CHANGE IS REALISED.

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is commitment to Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE), with all its business activities aligning with the national transformation agenda and thus complying with the B-BBEE Act 2003 and the Information Communications Technology (ICT) sector B-BBEE Codes. Currently, the SABC is a proud B-BBEE Level 3 entity. This achievement reflects a dedicated effort to empower black-owned businesses, foster entrepreneurship, create jobs, and drive economic growth.

The improvement in its B-BBEE score did not happen overnight, as the Corporation has experienced difficult trading conditions, which resulted in an unfortunate regression in the 2020 financial year. The factors that had led to the regression emanated from insufficient spend on skills development, enterprise and supplier development, and socio-economic Development.

However, the Corporation began to implement impactful and robust strategies, as well as bringing a focused approach, ensuring that by July 2024, the organisation had secured a Level 3 certificate after a rigorous verification process.

At the back of this great transformation, are the four key pillars that contributed to this transformation:

  1. Employment Equity and Management Control
  • Ensuring increased black representation in key decision-making roles.
  • Promoting black women to executive and board positions.
  • Driving diversity and inclusion at all levels of management.
  1. Skills Development
  • Investing in training and development for black employees, including those with disabilities.
  • Fostering a pipeline of black professionals and technical experts.
  • Strengthening internal capacity through best-practice HR and skills development policies.
  1. Socio-Economic Development (SED)
  • Expanding impact-driven projects that benefit local communities.
  • Delivering ICT-related initiatives to support underprivileged schools.
  • Launching a computer handover program in KwaZulu Natal and Northwest, benefiting 100 black schools.
  1. Enterprise Development (ED)
  • Driving enterprise and supplier development, despite financial constraints.
  • Initiating the Radio Feature Program, offering free airtime to ICT companies to promote their businesses.
  • Supporting contract negotiations and program briefings.

The organisation has embarked on an Enterprise Development Program, a strategic initiative that enhances the business skills and competitiveness of its beneficiaries. The program not only serves as a critical driver of transformation but also contributes meaningfully to the Enterprise Development element of the B-BBEE scorecard.

The SABC has also successfully embarked on an incubation programme with Gordon Institute Business School (GIBS) to support and develop entrepreneurial, business management and financial skills. The Corporation will also support 15 emerging businesses with laptops.

The SABC’s transformation is a testament to resilience, strategic planning, and an unwavering commitment to economic empowerment. It is against this backdrop that the SABC will continue to implement impactful strategies that will drive further improvements and strive to secure Level 2 status and beyond.

Phumzile Njoko, Head of Supply Chain Management

SABC CONTINUES TO PLAY A PIVOTAL ROLE IN THE PROTECTION AND PRESERVATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS

As South Africa commemorates Human Rights Day this month, with a theme of “Deepening a culture of social justice and human rights”, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) reaffirms its commitment to being the voice of the nation. The public broadcaster, using its multi-platforms of 19 radio stations, 5 video entertainment channels, streaming service SABC Plus and its various digital platforms, will continue to highlight human rights issues, in its quest to play a meaningful role in building a cohesive and progressive nation, whilst recognising that it serves diverse audiences.

The SABC in promoting human rights in respect to language, ensures that there is programming in all of our eleven official languages.

Furthermore, human rights issues such as gender-based violence, access to education and health services and crime, are continuously covered and discussed on many programmes on SABC. Restoring human dignity is one of the focal points of the SABC’s compelling programming, which highlights matters such as the plight of women and children, poverty-stricken communities and other societal challenges that strip away the dignity of citizens. In addition to drawing attention to these issues, the SABC has been successful in also mobilizing resources to help individuals who are impacted, particularly through its CSI initiatives and partnerships.

As the country reflects on these many challenges, the public broadcaster remains steadfast in bringing news and stories from across the breath of South Africa, providing public content that is easily accessible to all citizens, no matter their socioeconomic status or geographical location.

In discharging its public mandate, the organization will continue to provide programming aligned with its values of Respect, Trust, Integrity and Quality, as it contributes to democracy, through ensuring that all citizens are offered equal opportunities to access important information as part of their human right.

The SABC commits itself to continue playing a pivotal role in the protection and preservation of human rights. The SABC will continue to be an active participant in building the nation by providing informative, educational and entertaining content and providing a platform for public voices to be heard, ultimately influencing our society’s change for the better.

MEDIA STATEMENT | TRUFM UNVEILS FRESH PROGRAMMING LINE-UP EFFECTIVE 1 APRIL 2025

Gqeberha – Monday, 24 March 2025 – trufm is excited to reveal its refreshed line-up, effective 1 April 2025, as part of its commitment to delivering dynamic content that engages and grows its youthful audience. While the core line-up remains intact, key strategic shifts have been introduced to enhance programming, increase audience engagement, and strengthen trufm’s position as the leading youth radio platform in the Eastern Cape.

While trufm has made some presenter shifts, Apostle Bathandwa “MamK” Kwatshwa will be making a full transition to Umhlobo Wenene FM. We thank MamK for her meaningful contribution to trufm’s evening line-up over the years. Her move creates space for fresh talent, in line with trufm’s focus on youth-driven programming.

Well-loved DJ Anda Nkatu hangs up his trufm microphone after serving listeners for over 19 years. Throughout his tenure, he played a vital role in various capacities, including hosting both the morning and afternoon drive shows. With his departure, trufm listeners will also bid farewell to The 411, as the show comes to an end. His final broadcast on the station was on Friday, 21 March 2025, marking the close of a significant chapter in trufm history.

A fresh, young voice, Tabita Busani, has been recruited from a leading Cape Town community radio station to now anchor Hlalani Kum Mna Ndihlale Kuni. This strategic move is designed to strengthen trufm’s presence in key metropolitan areas and drive audience growth.

trufm is also introducing the Visual Pre-Party Mix Hour on Fridays from 18:00 to 19:00, bringing a new dimension to the pre-party atmosphere and setting the perfect vibe for the weekend. The slot will feature various DJs. Additionally, the station is revamping and reorganising its weekend party slots from 18:00 to 01:00, to deliver a high-energy, uninterrupted music experience.

Teen Zone, a new stand-alone show for pre-teens and teenagers will launch on Saturdays 09:00 – 10:00, offering dedicated content tailored to younger listeners. Meanwhile, the Sunday evening education show Up Skill, will move to an earlier timeslot of 18:00 – 19:00, ensuring greater accessibility for younger audiences.

trufm remains dedicated to content enhancement, digital expansion, and on-ground activations. To support this growth, the station will continue engaging audiences through podcasts and vodcasts, available on SABC+ and the trufm YouTube channel.

Loyiso Bala, Business Manager for EC Combo, says: “trufm’s latest line-up changes reflect our commitment to staying fresh, relevant, and connected to our audience. With a mix of familiar favourites and exciting new talent, we’re elevating our content to match the lifestyle of our listeners.”

MEDIA STATEMENT | RSG AND ATKV PROMOTE THE DEVELOPMENT OF WRITERS

Johannesburg – Tuesday, 18 March 2025 – RSG in partnership with AKTV, proudly presents the 29th RSG Radio Drama Writing Competition. Starting today, writers have the opportunity to try their hand at crafting a radio drama. Many of RSG’s seasoned writers took their first steps in writing by entering the RSG Radio Drama Writing Competition.

What makes this competition unique is the wealth of free resources available to writers. RSG is also excited to announce that, in collaboration with the ATKV, free workshops will once again be offered in Johannesburg and Cape Town in 2025. Participants will have the opportunity to attend the recording of a short radio drama, where experts will share insights into the finer nuances of radio drama production.

This year’s total prize money amounts to R115,000. The overall winner will receive R50,000, the runner-up R25,000, and the third-place drama R15,000. Additionally, a Young Writer (under 30 years old) will be awarded R15,000. A special merit prize of R10,000 will also be granted to a drama selected by the judges from the finalists that do not make the top four.

Beyond the prize money, the winning dramas will be broadcast on RSG in 2026.

The competition closes on 31 July 2025, and entries can only be submitted online. For more information, visit www.rsg.co.za.

Sonél Brits, Managing Director of ATKV-MSW says, “The ATKV is proud to support the 29th RSG Radio Drama Writing Competition. Investing in people’s lives by creating opportunities in their mother tongue is our greatest joy and most important duty.”

The ATKV believes that this competition nurtures a new generation of radio drama writers and contributes to the continued relevance of radio theatre. Brits adds that competitions like these play a role in the growth and development of the Afrikaans language. The ATKV is excited about the upcoming season and the expanding footprint of radio dramas, thanks to digital and social media platforms.

Marion Erskine was named the overall winner in 2024 and says that “there are few things as enchanting for a writer as hearing their words come to life.” According to him, a writer creates a story from an ordinary idea, and then a director, talented actors, and sound artists come together to transform it with their unique touch into something extraordinary. The words on white paper become a reality. It becomes a story that feels, breathes, and moves people.

There is no prescribed theme. Entries must be new and original radio dramas. Adaptations of existing material, stage plays, or previously published stories will not be accepted.

The full spectrum of Afrikaans varieties may be used. Only one entry per person is allowed. The duration of the dramas must be between 40 and 50 minutes. The document may be a maximum of 45 A4 pages, typed according to the competition rules. A maximum of seven characters is allowed.

A complete guide, the rules, and information regarding the workshops are available for free on RSG’s website. Visit RSG’s website at rsg.co.za for details about the competition.
