THE ROLE OF THE SABC IN PRESERVING SOUTH AFRICA’S HERITAGE

There are many layers to South Africa’s history, making it an incredibly rich and diverse nation. Each culture and language contribute to the unique blend of customs, beliefs, and stories that are passed down from one generation to the next. The SABC stands at the forefront of heritage preservation, showcasing the diversity that defines South African communities in their full richness and beauty, through compelling storytelling and music. This is achieved through a variety of programmes aired across the SABC’s 19 radio stations and five TV channels broadcasting in  all official South African languages , highlighting the linguistic diversity that forms the backbone of the nation’s heritage. By also sharing a variety of content materials on its digital platforms, the SABC ensures that these heritage treasures are accessible to all South Africans, young and old, in all corners of the country.

The public broadcaster has a plethora of TV and radio programmes aimed at highlighting the traditions, languages, and stories of various ethnic groups. Its programmes continue to play an instrumental role in bringing various cultures into the mainstream media, promoting a more inclusive and informed society. With telenovelas like Skeem Saam, Uzalo and Muvhango, the SABC brings cultural stories to life, reaching millions of viewers and creating conversations around shared heritage, while celebrating the differences that enrich our society.

As a public broadcaster, the SABC’s programmes are dedicated to amplifying the voices of South Africa’s diverse communities, ensuring that local stories and customs are shared with a broader audience, leading to a more inclusive society where everyone feels accepted and valued despite their differences. This inclusive approach, realised through multilingual and cultural-specific content, ensures that even minority cultural groups and lesser-known customs are recognised and celebrated on national platforms.

By broadcasting historical documentaries, cultural events, and music, the SABC plays a vital role in educating the public and preserving a unified sense of national identity. This consistent exposure not only keeps cultural practices alive but also nurtures a sense of appreciation and understanding across diverse communities.

With a mandate that has remained the same for 88 years, the SABC has done incredibly well in ensuring relevant and innovative programming that serves as a mirror to the lives of ordinary South Africans, telling stories that reflect the unique experiences of the nation. From tales of perseverance in the face of adversity to moments of joy and success, the SABC strives to curate content that resonates with viewers by addressing the challenges and opportunities that define their lives. Through relatable storytelling, the public broadcaster not only entertains but also empowers its audience, reminding them that their voices, stories, and experiences matter.

Happy Heritage month!

MISS SOUTH AFRICA PAGEANT BROADCAST REACHES 1.8 MILLION VIEWERSHIP ON S3

Johannesburg, 23 September 2024 – S3 is excited to have successfully hosted the live broadcast of the 2024 Miss South Africa Pageant, where the channel peaked at 1,774,969 million viewers at the time of crowning the new Miss South Africa, including the age group from 4 years+. [Source: BRC TAMS]

Building up to the Miss South Africa pageant, S3 launched this year’s edition of the reality series Crown Chasers, which started on the channel on the 29th of June 2024, hosted by the 2023 Miss South Africa, Natasha Joubert. Crown Chasers followed the contestants’ ups and downs and their fears, tears, laughs and joy as they edged closer to the moment when those left standing participated in the live grand finale at the SunBet Arena, Times Square in Pretoria on August 10, taking home the Miss South Africa title.

At the 2024 Miss South Pageant, the Top 10 competed for the coveted title, with Mia Le Roux crowned, making history as the first-ever differently abled Miss South Africa at the spectacular 66th pageant finale.

Regarding channel performance, during the live broadcast of the Miss South Africa Pageant, the slot increased by 193% when comparing the slot average of the previous 4 weeks. Compared to 2023, the Miss SA Pageant viewers grew by 28% and peaked at 37% more than in 2023.

“The growth of Miss SA on S3 is phenomenal to see, not just on the audiences but on revenue as well, as this year the pageant was acquired as AFP. The fact of commercial brands wanting to work and partner with the channel through compelling shows that have a proven ability to deliver audiences is a sign that the business strategy we have been implementing is working.

We are already excited to see what we do next year with the Miss SA Team and how we grow from here. S3 wishes Mia Le Roux all the best in her reign as the 2024 Miss South Africa”. – S3 Head of Channel, Sane Zondi.

THOUGHT LEADERSHIP PIECE | THE EVOLUTION OF SABC+ TRANSFORMING SOUTH AFRICAN DIGITAL LANDSCAPE

SABC+ The evolution of the Over-The-Top (OTT) streaming service is steadily transforming the digital landscape in South Africa.

There is an ongoing debate amongst various scholars and media experts regarding the role of public service broadcasters considering the many technological changes in the broadcasting industry such as varying media consumption habits on multiplatform and multi-devices.

SABC+ as a public service digital platform, which is discharging publicly mandated programming, has responded with a resounding yes, through 19 radio stations and 6 television channels. The platform is providing South African viewers with free access to linear viewing, podcasts, radio streaming and an impressive catch-up library.

Since its launch in November 2022, SABC+ has managed to not only create a buzz, but has made great strides as a newcomer in the OTT market.

SABC+ has cemented its role in ensuring that South African viewers have universal access to sports, including games of national interest. The Rugby World Cup 2023 in France became the catalyst for the platform. The tournament managed to garner an average of 6,3 million views on both the app and web portal. The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 in India elicited as much interest, with viewers watching a total of 15,6 million minutes for the duration of the tournament on SABC+. The AFCON 2023/2024 tournament in January increased the total views to over 1,3 million for January and February solidifying SABC+’s presence as the home of sport for South African fans.

The viewership has been on an upward trend since its launch and in addition to popular linear shows, special occasions have spearheaded the growth in viewership.

The recent national and provincial elections held of 29 May are also a testament to the role SABC+ played in ensuring South Africans were well informed during the elections. The SABC launched SABC News Live, a special 24-hour pop-up channel on SABC+, with the intention of giving South Africans uninterrupted, round the clock coverage of elections content. The pop-up channel garnered a total of 931 593 views between 27 May and 2 June 2024. South Africans gathered on the OTT platform leading up to elections as well as post elections.

The SABC remains committed to innovation and in ensuring that the streaming platform remains world class. The SABC also upgraded its OTT platform on 3 July 2024 with enhanced features. The enhanced SABC+ is now compatible and downloadable on Apple TV (TVOS) and Google TV/Android Box. It also includes catch-up content and Video on Demand (VOD). The upgrades were well received by the public with over 150 000 registrations recorded within the first four (4) weeks.

Just in the first month since its revamp, the platform attracted 159824 new users. The broadcast of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games on the platform played a major role in the uptake of new registrations during this period, and the surge in viewership during August 2024, was driven by other live events such as the live Miss SA pageant. As at September, SABC+ boasts 390597 registered users.

The top 10 programmes in August 2024 include programmes currently trending on linear television channels such as Skeem Saam, Uzalo, Generations – The Legacy, and the recently launched S3’s B’Dazzed, starring media personality Bonang Matheba, as well as nostalgic programming such as 7 de Laan, Velaphi and Zone 14.

Top 10 programmes and figures for this period were as follows:

2024-08-01 / 2024-08-31

SHOW NAME SEASON NAME TOTAL VIEWS UNIQUE VIEWS
1.     Skeem Saam Season 13 608433 376810

WIVES STEP INTO EACH OTHER’S SHOES ON THE LOCAL VERSION OF WIFE SWAP ON S3

S3 is excited to add the local version of the reality series Wife Swap to the channel offering. A 10-part Wife Swap South Africa will be broadcast on Mondays at 18:00, debuting on the 9th of September 2024.

In the series, two families from different backgrounds, with contrasting lifestyles and values, agree to swap wives in a heartfelt and eye-opening social experiment for one week. Wife Swap explores the joys, challenges, and transformative experiences that arise when wives step into each other’s shoes, all while fostering understanding, empathy, and personal growth.

Every episode of Wife Swap begins by introducing each family and getting an idea of how their households run.  The spouses then leave for their new homes. After a brief snoop around the house, the spouses meet their temporary families.  Aided only by an instruction manual left by their predecessor, the spouse must spend the first half of their time living according to the rules of the house, often prompting the question: ‘How do people live like this?’ Cameras follow the two spouses as they adapt to parenting, socialising and running the household according to the other spouse’s rulebook. Then, the swapped spouse gets to run the household as they see fit for the second half of their stay. What follows is a fun, heartfelt, and eye-opening experiment that changes lives and reveals what goes on behind closed doors.

At the end of each episode, the spouses are reunited with their partners and hold a round-table discussion where they unpack their experiences and talk about what they learnt in their time. Wife Swap explores the joys, challenges, and transformative experiences that arise when wives step into each other’s shoes, all while fostering understanding, empathy, and personal growth.

MEDIA STATEMENT | SUPERSPORT AND SABC ONCE-OFF PARTNERSHIP IN CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF SOUTH AFRICA’S DEMOCRACY DURING ICONIC SPRINGBOKS-ALL BLACKS CLASH

30 AUGUST 2024 – SuperSport is proud to announce a partnership with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) in celebration of 30 years of democracy in the country.

In collaboration with the South African Rugby Union (SARU) and the Ministry of Sport, Arts & Culture, SuperSport concluded a once-off agreement to mark the historical occasion celebrating 30 years of democracy, giving the SABC the rights to broadcast the iconic Castle Lager Rugby Championship match between the Springboks and the All Blacks at Emirates Airline Park on Saturday 31 August 2024.

As the country celebrates this historic democratic milestone, SuperSport is delighted that the occasion will be marked by the two titanic rugby nations doing battle at the famous Ellis Park Stadium.

This is the same venue where the Springboks beat the All Blacks to lift the 1995 World Cup, barely one year into democracy.  It was a moment that personified the country’s transition into unity, with the late former President Nelson Mandela handing over the Webb Ellis trophy to then-Springbok captain Francois Pienaar.

It is also 30 years since the Springboks played the All Blacks for the first time after South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994.

Says SuperSport CEO Rendani Ramovha, “Having had discussions with SARU and Minister Gayton McKenzie, we decided to join hands in celebration of 30 years of democracy. It is fitting that we have partnered with the SABC on this one particular occasion to bring this match to television viewers.

“This special match between the two great rugby-playing nations sits at the centre of the birth of democracy in our country, coupled to the fact that it is exactly 30 years ago that the Springboks and the All Blacks clashed for the first time in the post-election era; hence the broadcasting of this particular match by both SuperSport and the SABC in this once-off celebration.”

The SABC Group Chief Executive Officer, Nomsa Chabeli stated that “We are delighted that we have worked tirelessly to ensure that the larger part of the South African population experience the rugby euphoria this weekend. The SABC has historically played a pivotal in role in recording the successful story of the national Rugby team for many decades and has been part of celebrating their key milestones, including the SABC being a host broadcaster of the 1995 Rugby World.  The SABC takes pride in fulfilling its commitment to providing universal access to sport of national interest and enabling South African citizens to enjoy and be part of the national moments. The SABC’s extensive reach and footprint allows for a wider access to the game of such national importance as part of celebrating 30 years of democracy, as such our audiences can catch the game on SABC 2, SABC Sport Channel, SABC+ and our various SABC radio stations in their preferred languages”.

“South African Rugby is pleased by this agreement between SuperSport and the SABC relating to this match tomorrow which is of historical significance to South Africans,” said Mark Alexander, President of the South African Rugby Union.

“We want to thank SuperSport for this selfless act of generosity in partnering the SABC which will result in South Africans being able to share in this momentous occasion. It is a significant milestone in our sport, reflecting the progress we’ve made over the past three decades and underscoring our commitment to fostering social cohesion. As we celebrate this legacy, we are proud to embrace our diversity as a source of strength, both on the field and within our organisation.

“We express our deepest appreciation South Africans who steadfastly support our team. Your unwavering dedication is the cornerstone of our success and unity.”

The build-up will be preceded by a 30 minutes-long documentary, celebrating 30 years of democracy and rugby’s unifying role in our young democracy.
