SABC SETS THE RECORD STRAIGHT ON SAFA CONTRACT

Johannesburg – Thursday, 11 October 2018 The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has noted the statement by the South African Football Association (SAFA), announcing that all future international football matches involving the national teams, Bafana Bafana and Banyana Banyana will not be broadcast on SABC platforms.

 

The SABC would like to place on record that it made a commercially viable offer that would enable the SABC to deliver football matches to South African audiences on SABC platforms and this offer was rejected by SAFA. This follows the expiry of the previous contract between SAFA and the SABC. On the previous contract there were obligations and milestones which the SABC has met, including the payment milestones of that contract, albeit late given the SABC’s dire financial situation. In this regard, the SABC made full and final payment on the agreement as agreed with SAFA.

SABC RESPONDS TO ALLEGATIONS OF IN-FIGHTING AT UKHOZI FM

Johannesburg –Tuesday, 09 October 2018 – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has noted media reports alleging in-fighting between Ukhozi FM management. The allegations further claim that this in-fighting has destabilised operations and affected staff morale at the station.

The SABC would like to place on record that these allegations are untrue and malicious with the intent to derail management’s focus on key and strategic issues of the station.

UZALO MAKES TELEVISION HISTORY WITH 10.2 MILLION VIEWERS

Johannesburg –Tuesday, 09 October 2018 – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is delighted with the performance of one of its flagship television programmes Uzalo, which is currently being broadcast on SABC1.

As at the end of September 2018, Uzalo has broken all records in the history of television viewing in South Africa, by reaching a massive number of 10.2 million viewers. This makes Uzalo the most watched television programme by far.

SABC RADIO PARTNERS WITH CHOMI SOCIAL NETWORKING SERVICE

Johannesburg –Monday, 08 October 2018 – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has teamed up with a majority black-owned company, Biza Telecoms (Pty) Ltd (Biza Telecoms), which has developed a social networking service called Chomi (“friend”).

The SABC’s African Language Services (ALS) stations are using the Chomi social network to encourage their listeners to keep in touch and participate in programming, in the broadcast language of the respective radio stations.

SABC MOURNS THE PASSING OF MS ROWENA BAIRD

Johannesburg, Friday, 05 October 2017 – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), is saddened to learn of the passing of Ms. Rowena Baird, after battling with cancer for a long time. Ms. Baird started her broadcasting career in the mid 1980’s at Radio BOP. She spent time at a variety of radio stations over the years, including stints at Radio 2000, Channel Africa and Metro FM.

Ms. Baird was a seasoned and versatile broadcaster, with experience which includes presenting news, talk shows, magazine, current affairs and music programmes.  Ms. Baird also presented a series of voter education programmes on television and was a co-presenter of The Breakfast Club on SABC television in the late 1990’s.

SABC RESPONSE TO DA STATEMENT ON THE SALARY COUNT DOWN CAMPAIGN

Johannesburg, Thursday, 04 October 2018 – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has noted the Democratic Alliance’s count down for the SABC to reveal its Top Management’s salaries. Salaries of the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Chief Operations Officer (COO)  are recorded in the Annual Results of the corporation and the figures that the DA is requesting will be contained in the 2018/19 Annual Results. However the SABC wishes to put on record that the total current salaries of these Executive Directors have been significantly reduced.

REDI TLHABI HOSTS A NEW PROGRAMME ON SABC NEWS

Johannesburg, Wednesday, 03 October 2018 – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is delighted to announce that Redi Tlhabi is joining SABC News. Thlabi is set to host a new Current Affairs show named Unfiltered, launching on Sunday, 07 October 2018 at 20:30, on the SABC News Channel and SABC 3. This is part of SABC’s efforts to attract top talent to enhance and strengthen audience experience, in line with its turnaround plan.

Tlhabi, who is no stranger to the SABC, brings immense experience and knowledge in the television news domain, including working with international broadcasting platforms such as Aljazeera and BBC World News. She is a distinguished broadcast journalist, columnist and author.

SABC SETS THE RECORD STRAIGHT FOLLOWING THE DA STATEMENT ON AN INTERNAL MEMO

Johannesburg, Monday, 01 October 2018-The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has noted with concern the factually incorrect and misleading media statement issued by the Democratic Alliance (DA). This statement inaccurately claims that a memo was issued to SABC employees “indicating a freeze of salary increases and hiring of new staff”. The fact is, on 27 September 2018 the SABC issued a notice to all staff members communicating the suspension of the following, with immediate effect:

THE SABC APPOINTS THE HEAD OF LEGAL SERVICES

Johannesburg, Monday, 01 October 2018 -The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Advocate Ntuthuzelo Vanara as Head of SABC Legal Services effective, 1 October 2018.

Advocate Vanara brings a long distinguished legal career having worked in both the private and public sectors. He served successfully in various positions including his most recent role of  Senior Manager of Legal and Constitutional Services at the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa.

SABC’s RESPONSE TO THE DEMOCRATIC ALLIANCE ZONDO COMMISSION BROADCAST

Johannesburg, Sunday 30 September 2018 – The SABC has noted media reports alleging that the Democratic Alliance (DA) has written a letter to the SABC board chairperson, Bongumusa Makhathini requesting that the Zondo Judicial Commission of Inquiry into State Capture proceedings be aired live on the SABC’s terrestrial platforms, in addition to the current live broadcast on SABC News carried on the DStv channel 404. The State Capture enquiry is receiving extensive coverage across all bulletins, radio stations and television channels under the direction of the SABC’s editorial staff.
