SABC NEWS CELEBRATES 75 YEARS

Established on 17 July 1950, SABC News is commemorating 75 years since the broadcast of the first news bulletin on its then channel, Springbok Radio. SABC News is recognised for its pivotal role in documenting historical events and milestones of the country, with programmes which have continually ensured that South Africans have access to the content of national and international interest.

SABC News has undergone a significant transformation in its news delivery, evolving from initially broadcasting just two news bulletins in English and Afrikaans to offering comprehensive coverage in all South African languages. What began as a single radio station has expanded into a multi-platform operation that includes 19 radio stations and several television channels, among them a 24-hour news channel dedicated to keeping the nation informed. This growth also embraces the use of SABC’s digital platforms and various technological innovations to effectively reach and engage audiences.

SABC News has continued to provide news of historic events which have made an impact over the years in the public space and content that reflects the South African story in the context of a democratic transformation, from coverage of the release of President Nelson Mandela, the first democratic elections in 1994 to 2024, Presidential inaugurations and World-class coverage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in conjunction with SABC Sport. As SABC News celebrates 75 years of excellence, it continues to serve as a trusted custodian of South Africa’s history, committed to informing the nation while preserving its most defining moments for generations to come.
