SABC ANNOUNCES MZANSI SUPER LEAGUE (MSL) BROADCAST SCHEDULE

Johannesburg – Friday, 09 November 2018 – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is pleased to release the broadcast schedule for the Mzansi Super League (MSL), in which the SABC has partnered with Cricket South Africa (CSA) to broadcast the tournament live and exclusive on SABC platforms.

The hashtag for the league is #MSLT20 and this partnership will allow the SABC to bring the much anticipated #MSLT20 to millions of audiences across the country using the power of SABC Television, Radio and Digital platforms.

SABC ACCEPTS MEMORANDUM DELIVERED BY ORGANISED LABOUR

Johannesburg, Friday 09 November 2018 –The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has noted the peaceful picketing/protests which took place at the various SABC offices around the country by Broadcasting, Electronic, Media & Allied Workers Union (BEMAWU) and Communications Workers Union (CWU).

Memoranda were delivered by the respective Unions and the SABC will review the memoranda and respond to organised labour.

SABC TO APPEAR BEFORE SCOPA AROUND 2017/18 ANNUAL REPORT

Johannesburg, Wednesday 07 November 2018 – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) will today appear before the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA), in terms of Standing Rule 206 of the National Assembly.

The SABC will present details pertaining to irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure, accrual and commitments, as contained in the SABC’s 2017/18 Annual Report.

The SABC is currently in a dire financial situation, which has resulted in the corporation being technically insolvent and this is mostly due to the previous management’s maladministration and lack of adherence to governance policies.

FINDINGS AND RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE COMMISSION OF INQUIRY INTO SEXUAL HARASSMENT

Johannesburg- Tuesday, 6 November 2018 – On 1 June 2018, the SABC announced the establishment of Commission of Inquiry into Sexual Harassment (the Commission) to investigate instances of sexual harassment at the Corporation. The Commission, which is independent from the SABC and headed by an independent commissioner completed its work on 31 October 2018 and presented its final report to the SABC board which the board accepted in its entirety.

 

The inquiry was organisation-wide and submissions came from all the provinces in which the SABC has presence, except the Western Cape. The objective of the inquiry was to determine whether there is a discernible trend of sexual harassment at the SABC.  The Commission aimed to determine the prevalence and extent of the sexual abuse and the role of institutional culture in enabling it, and the reasons why the problem had not sharply come to the fore, despite the SABC having an existing Sexual Harassment Policy.

FACTUAL SABC INFORMATION ON THE REMUNERATION PACKAGES OF EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS

Johannesburg- Friday, 2 November 2018 -The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has noted the reactions from various parties following the release of the packages of the Corporation’s Executive Directors.

The SABC would like to re-iterate and place on record that the packages are significantly lower than those of the previous Executive Directors and amount to 0.4% of the current salary bill of R3.1 billion.

SABC AND MICT SETA INTERNSHIP LAUNCH AND LEARNERSHP GRADUATION

Johannesburg, Thursday, 01 November 2018 – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) and The Media, Information and Communication Technologies Sector Education and Training Authority (MICT SETA), will today launch the SABC’s 2018/19 Internship Programme, and celebrate the graduation of learners who participated in the Sound Technology (NQF Level 5), Film and Television (NQF Level 5) and New Venture Creation (NQF Level 2) Learnership programmes in the 2016/17 financial year.

The internship programme is funded by the MICT SETA and will cater for 300 interns, with the aim of creating a talent pool in the ICT sector and give opportunities to graduates who have never had work experiential learning or work exposure. These interns will be placed in various departments across the SABC.

The Film and Television Learnership Programme training component was outsourced to the National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa (NEMISA).

In addition, the Sound Technology and Film and Television Learnership Programmes were supported and boosted with a Skills Programme in New Venture Creation, with the aim to have learners register businesses after completion of the respective programmes. This was a critical training component, equipping and empowering learners with the skills to create job opportunities, not only for themselves but other aspiring youth and individuals.

Madoda Mxakwe, SABC Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) stated that ”the SABC has partnered with MICT SETA as part of the public broadcaster’s commitment to youth skills development, with particular focus on the disadvantaged communities of our county. Through relevant and strategic partnerships aimed at educating and empowering our youth, this project is line with with the National Development Plan’s objective of building capabilities”.

Mr. Mxakwe further stated that “with the technology migration from analogue to digital, it is vital that we support the development of skills, which support the harnessing and mastery of new technologies. The graduates will be exposed to the new world of Digital Technologies where quality of sound and picture resolution will be key focus”.

Charlton Philiso, Acting Chief Executive Officer MICT SETA said “the MICT SETA recognises the need to partner with industry to develop sustainable interventions that address skills development and ensure a successful digital broadcasting skills legacy”.

“Furthermore, collaboration with State Owned Entities (SOE), Business, Labour and other industry leaders, is key in pursuing the MICT SETA’s mission namely, to generate, facilitate and accelerate the processes of quality skills development at all levels in the sector” concluded Mr. Philiso.

The partnership between the SABC and MICT SETA is a means to close the skills gap in the country, by transferring critical skills to our youth and preparing them for the job market.

SABC TO PROCEED WITH SECTION 189

Johannesburg – Monday, 29 October 2018 The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) today issued a notice to all staff informing them of the SABC’s intention to proceed with Section 189 of the Labour Relations Act (“LRA”).

The process was halted following the joint consensus seeking meeting held on 12 October 2018 with organized labour. At this meeting it was agreed that the LRA’s Section 189 notice will be put in abeyance until further details as requested by organized labour, were made available. The meeting also agreed to the appointment of a Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) facilitator who will foresee the consultation process.

SABC TO APPROACH THE LABOUR COURT ON IRREGULAR APPOINTMENTS AND PROMOTIONS

Johannesburg – Monday, 29 October 2018 The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is approaching the Labour Court with an application to have irregular appointments and promotions declared invalid as first identified in the 2014 Public Protector’s report, “When Governance and Ethics Fail”.

 

The Public Protector’s report had identified irregular appointments, promotions and salary increases of certain employees that are no longer with the SABC.

SABC WARNS PUBLIC OF IMPOSTERS POSING AS TV LICENSE OFFICIALS

Johannesburg – Friday, 26 October 2018 – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has noted with concern a WhatsApp message doing the rounds warning members of the public, particularly in the Weltevreden area west of Johannesburg, of would-be robbers posing as SABC TV License agents.

SABC COMMEMORATES 41ST ANNIVERSARY OF BLACK WEDNESDAY

Johannesburg – Friday, 19 October 2018 – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) joins hands with the rest of the media fraternity, in the commemoration of Black Wednesday. This year marks 41 years since Black Wednesday, when oppression against the press by the apartheid government took place on 19 October 1977, through the banning of The World, Weekend World and Pro Veritate publications.

The dawn of our democracy brought with it many freedoms, amongst them freedom of the press, which is enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.
