MEDIA STATEMENT | SABC SPORT IS AN OFFICIAL MEDIA PARTNER FOR TS GALAXY (PSL) v FC AUGSBURG (BUNDESLIGA) MATCH

Johannesburg – Thursday, 11 July 2024 – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is thrilled to announce an exciting partnership with TS Galaxy FC, as it will broadcast the much-anticipated Mpumalanga Premier’s International Cup match between TS Galaxy FC of the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) and FC Augsburg from the German Bundesliga on 27 July 2024 at 15h00. This international club friendly match will be live on SABC Sport in partnership with the TS Galaxy Foundation.

FC Augsburg was founded in 1907 and is the largest football club in Swabian Bavaria with 25,000 members. The club was promoted to the Bundesliga for the first time in 2011, where it has remained ever since. In the 2015/16 season FCA played in the Europa League for the first time.

The friendly international matches will commence on 20 July 2024, where FC Augsburg will play against Tanzanian record champions, Young Africans SC at 15h00 and TS Galaxy FC will play against Eswatini league champions, Mbabane Swallows FC at 20h00, which will also be broadcast live on SABC Sport. Both matches will take place at Mbombela Stadium.

Keletso Totlhanyo, Head of Sport at SABC said, “We are excited to bring these matches to the screens of millions of football fans across South Africa. This broadcast signifies our commitment to providing diverse and high-quality sports content to our viewers.”

TS Galaxy Foundation Chairperson Tim Sukazi stated: “We are very ecstatic to have managed to bring a German Bundesliga Club to our shores. In as much as the primary objective of the matches is to prepare both TS Galaxy FC and FC Augsburg for their respective league competitions, the biggest beneficiary will be the ordinary South African audience who will watch a German Bundesliga club playing in South Africa, which is a rare event. It is also fulfilling that FC Augsburg wish to achieve a long-standing partnership with TS Galaxy FC that will also see rural communities in and around Mpumalanga deriving certain benefits through the partnership that has been formed between the two clubs. We would also like to thank the SABC for coming on board as a broadcast partner.”

FC Augsburg CEO Michael Ströll explained, “It impressed us how much effort the TS Galaxy Foundation together with the local authorities put in for us to be able to come to South Africa for the first time. We are very much looking forward to the upcoming trip to Mpumalanga and the two matches at Mbombela Stadium, one of the venues for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. FC Augsburg is proud to represent the Bundesliga in South Africa.

The broadcast of the matches will not only entertain sports enthusiasts but also promote cultural exchange and international sporting solidarity. It highlights the global appeal and unifying power of football. SABC Sport is also the official broadcaster of the Bundesliga.

Gqeberha – Wednesday, 10 July 2024 – Get ready for an unforgettable Women’s Month event as Umhlobo Wenene FM proudly announces the return of its signature event, ‘Khanya Gqiyazana Lifestyle Workshop’, set to take place on 10 August 2024 at the Century City Conference Centre in Cape Town, from 12:00 to 17:00.

Khanya Gqiyazana is an informative and engaging workshop enjoyed by women of all ages. Fashion, business issues, relationship matters, and entertainment are some of the prominent features of the workshop. The event includes a 3-course meal and a panel of high-profile speakers from the business, relationship, and lifestyle fields who will give talks on their chosen topics.

The speakers will include international multi-award-winning food expert, author, and entrepreneur Siba Mtongana, and Khosi Liwani, a transformative figure in Nyanga’s entrepreneurial landscape. MEDIA STATEMENT | SPRINGBOK INBOUND TEST MATCHES AGAINST IRELAND WILL NO LONGER BE BROADCAST ON SABC 2

Johannesburg – Friday, 5 July 2024 – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) regrets that it will no longer be able to broadcast the Springbok Inbound Test matches against Ireland on Saturday, the 6th and Saturday the 13th of July 2024, as previously communicated.

 

This decision follows the recent urgent litigation at the Competition Appeal Court over the broadcast rights to the Test matches which necessitated the SABC to review its decision to continue with the sub-license Agreement concluded with Multichoice.

 

The SABC remains committed to broadcasting sports of national interest and to this end, the following SABC’s African Language Stations (Motsweding FM, Lesedi FM, Thobela FM, Ukhozi FM, Umhlobo Wenene FM, Ligwalagwala FM, Ikwekwezi FM, Munghana Lonene FM, Phalaphala FM, RSG) and Radio 2000 will be broadcasting all the six Inbound Springbok matches. The kick off time for the match tomorrow is 17h00.

 

The SABC will always strive to achieve its sports broadcast mandate without compromising its commercial objectives.

Stephen says, “It has been the honour of my professional life to speak to the entire nation every morning over the last six years, and I have learnt an incredible amount from presenting SAfm Sunrise. I will deeply miss the Sunrise team, our listeners and particularly our callers”.

 

SABC Radio management thanks him for his loyal service and impeccable work ethic and wishes him well in his future endeavours. A new presenter for ‘SAfm Sunrise’ will be announced in due course.

MEDIA STATEMENT | SUPERSPORT AND SABC REACH AGREEMENT TO TELEVISE ICC T20 MEN’S WORLD CUP FINAL AND SPRINGBOK CASTLE LAGER INBOUND TESTS ON PUBLIC BROADCASTER

Johannesburg – Saturday, 29 June 2024 – SuperSport and the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) are pleased to announce that the public broadcaster will televise the ICC T20 Men’s World Cup final live as well as two Springbok Test matches on a delayed basis.

The T20 World Cup final between South Africa and India will be played today (Saturday 29 June) at 16h30, SA time, at the Kensington Oval in Barbados, while the Springboks face Ireland in the rugby tests on Saturday the 6th and Saturday the 13th of July.

The men’s Proteas cricket team made history on Thursday by reaching the final of a senior ICC World Cup tournament for the first time following their inspired nine-wicket semi-final victory over Afghanistan at the Brian Lara Cricket Stadium in Trinidad and Tobago.

SuperSport CEO Rendani Ramovha said: “We are pleased that an agreement has been reached with the SABC. The men’s national cricket team final against India today will be followed in July with the double defending Rugby World Cup champions, the Springboks, taking on Europe’s top side, Ireland, in two home tests”, concluded Ramovha.

SABC GCEO, Ms Nomsa Chabeli stated that “The SABC has a pivotal role to inspire and build national pride and patriotism amongst citizens, and this agreement is one of the many initiatives that the organization has been working hard on to ensure that citizens participate in major historic country moments. We are thrilled that our audiences will be part of the Proteas’ momentous occasion during the ICC T20 Men’s World Cup final match. The SABC’s broadcast will start from 15h30 on SABC 2 and our radio stations will carry the updates. We are also excited that we have also clinched a deal for two Springbok Test matches to be broadcast on Saturday the 6th and Saturday the 13th of July at 20h30, and this is testament to our commitment to inclusivity and ensuring that our diverse audiences’ needs are catered for”.

SuperSport will broadcast the cricket final live on SS Grandstand (DStvchannel 201), SuperSport Cricket (DStv channel 212) as well as SuperSport Variety 4 (DStv channel 209). This channel is available to DStv customers, including those on DStv Compact to DStv Access packages. Viewers will experience an hour’s special build-up before the start of the match.

MEDIA STATEMENT | SABC AND MICT SETA CONTINUE TO PROVIDE SKILLS DEVELOPMENT AS 110 INTERNS ARE PLACED AT PUBLIC BROADCASTER

Johannesburg – Thursday, 13 June 2024 – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) and The Media, Information and Communication Technologies Sector Education and Training Authority (MICT SETA) are pleased to once again work together in the facilitation of providing training to deserving learners in the ICT, media and broadcasting sphere.

For the 2024/25 financial year, 110 interns have been placed across various divisions within the organisation and in all nine regional SABC offices.

This partnership between the public broadcaster and the MICT SETA is anchored in ensuring that new talent receives training and mentorship, from skilled and experienced SABC personnel, whilst providing growth and sustainability for the industry from a human capital perspective.

Ms. Nomsa Chabeli, the SABC’s Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) says, “As an organisation, we warmly welcome the new intake of interns. We trust that this experience will be life changing, as they will get to see firsthand, the hard work that goes behind the SABC serving the public. We wish them all the best and we hope that they will give their all, as they begin to increase their skills, knowledge base and employability”.

Ms. Chabeli further commented, “The SABC would also like to thank MICT SETA for their support and partnership. This collaboration is crucial in making our internship programme impactful”.

 

The long-standing partnership between the MICT SETA and SABC, initiated in 2011, underscores a shared commitment to addressing skills development in the Media and ICT sector.

Mr Matome Madibana, Chief Executive Officer at MICT SETA states, “This collaboration supports the goals of the National Development Plan (NDP) to eliminate poverty and reduce inequality by 2030 through unity, economic growth, and capacity building, which are part of what we have been established for as SETA’s. Furthermore, the NDP emphasizes the significance of collaborative partnerships, as emphasized in the White Paper on Post School Education and Training, re-affirming our commitment to fostering inclusive and innovative solutions”.

“Our 13 – year partnership stands as testament to its efficacy in offering providing learners with invaluable knowledge and upskilling in scarce skills aligned with South Africa’s job market demands”, Mr Madibana continues.

The SABC and MICT SETA internship programme forms part of a hybrid of successful interventions and partnerships that the MICT SETA has undertaken to grow the pool of skills in the information and communication technologies industries.

Johannesburg – Tuesday, 11 June 2024 – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is proud to be recognised in the 14th annual Brand Africa 100 | Africa’s Best Brands research and rankings by Brand Africa.

According to Brand Africa’s press release “The research brought together “30 diverse eminent South Africans who’ve built and/or led some of the most iconic brands in pre- and post-democratic SA to debate and determine the 30 most admired brands, events, ideas and people who have shaped South Africa over the past 30 years”.

The SABC is positioned 2nd and 3rd place respectively, in the ‘Best 5 South African campaigns over 30 years (A-Z)’ through its top public service commercial radio station METRO FM’s iconic brand campaign ‘What makes you black’ and its mother brand campaign for the 2010 FIFA World Cup campaign ‘Feel it, it is here’, which united the country in supporting Bafana Bafana.

The Corporation is also placed 3rd in the ‘Top Media Brand in SA’ category.

Ms. Mmoni Seapolelo, the Acting Group Executive for Corporate Affairs and Marketing, said, “We are pleased by the recognition, as this survey was about gauging which South African brands have been admired over the last 30 years. Johannesburg – Monday, 03 June 2024 – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), would like to alert the public to the hacking of Radio 2000’s X (formerly Twitter) account.

The hack happened on Sunday, 02 June 2024 and X has been duly informed and the station is taking steps to rectify the situation.

Any posts from ‘Tesla News’, which has currently taken over the account must be disregarded by the public. Radio 2000 will keep its X platform users updated on-air and on its other social media platforms, on any further developments.
