SABC TO PROCEED WITH SECTION 189

Johannesburg – Monday, 29 October 2018 The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) today issued a notice to all staff informing them of the SABC’s intention to proceed with Section 189 of the Labour Relations Act (“LRA”).

The process was halted following the joint consensus seeking meeting held on 12 October 2018 with organized labour. At this meeting it was agreed that the LRA’s Section 189 notice will be put in abeyance until further details as requested by organized labour, were made available. The meeting also agreed to the appointment of a Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) facilitator who will foresee the consultation process.

SABC TO APPROACH THE LABOUR COURT ON IRREGULAR APPOINTMENTS AND PROMOTIONS

Johannesburg – Monday, 29 October 2018 The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is approaching the Labour Court with an application to have irregular appointments and promotions declared invalid as first identified in the 2014 Public Protector’s report, “When Governance and Ethics Fail”.

 

The Public Protector’s report had identified irregular appointments, promotions and salary increases of certain employees that are no longer with the SABC.

SABC WARNS PUBLIC OF IMPOSTERS POSING AS TV LICENSE OFFICIALS

Johannesburg – Friday, 26 October 2018 – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has noted with concern a WhatsApp message doing the rounds warning members of the public, particularly in the Weltevreden area west of Johannesburg, of would-be robbers posing as SABC TV License agents.

SABC COMMEMORATES 41ST ANNIVERSARY OF BLACK WEDNESDAY

Johannesburg – Friday, 19 October 2018 – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) joins hands with the rest of the media fraternity, in the commemoration of Black Wednesday. This year marks 41 years since Black Wednesday, when oppression against the press by the apartheid government took place on 19 October 1977, through the banning of The World, Weekend World and Pro Veritate publications.

The dawn of our democracy brought with it many freedoms, amongst them freedom of the press, which is enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.

Global Citizen Festival to partner with DStv, SABC, MTV International for global live broadcast of Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100; hosted and presented by the Motsepe Foundation

JOHANNESBURG 18th October 2018 – International advocacy organisation Global Citizen today announced that DStv, SABC, and Viacom’s MTV International will be the broadcast partners for the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100, a free-ticketed event, which will take place on Sunday, 2 December 2018 at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa. The live broadcast will be transmitted in over 180 countries across six continents.

DStv will broadcast the event live to all its customers throughout South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. It will also carry the responsibility to film the event and provide the live broadcast to the SABC and other international broadcast partners who will extend the reach world-wide.

SABC MEETING WITH ORGANISED LABOUR

Johannesburg – Saturday, 13 October 2018 The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) management met with organised labour on Friday 12 October 2018 to initiate the joint consensus seeking process in terms of section 189 of the Labour Relations Act (LRA).

 

Following this joint consensus seeking meeting it was agreed that the LRA’s section 189 notice will be put in abeyance until further details as requested by organised labour, are made available. This was agreed to in order to take the joint consensus seeking process forward. This was also to ensure that the parties work together in finding an amicable solution, in an attempt to avoid and/or minimize any possible retrenchments as envisaged in terms of section 189 of the LRA.

SABC 1 TO BROADCAST THE 13TH ANNUAL SATMA AWARDS

SABC1 will screen the 13th annual SATMA Awards on Sunday, 14 October 2018, at 21h00. The 2018 traditional awards ceremony was held under the theme ‘Embrace your Heritage’ on Saturday, 29 September 2018 at the Mmabatho Convention Centre in Mahikeng (Bokone-Bophirima Province).

SABC 1 enjoys a long-standing relationship with the SATMAS as a media partner to these prestigious awards ceremony spanning over 13 years.

One of the main attractions to this years’ event was the honouring of the following legends: Lasting Legacy – Simon Senna; Sol Plaatjie; King Hintsa, and Rex Rabanye. The Lifetime Achievement went to Mme Paulne Thisazana and Khathide Ngobe.

SABC 1 viewers will be treated to spectacular live performances including hip hop giants: HHP and Khuli Chana; Destruction Boyz; Abathandwa, Mafikizolo, Phuzukhemisi and many more.

SABC SETS THE RECORD STRAIGHT ON SAFA CONTRACT

Johannesburg – Thursday, 11 October 2018 The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has noted the statement by the South African Football Association (SAFA), announcing that all future international football matches involving the national teams, Bafana Bafana and Banyana Banyana will not be broadcast on SABC platforms.

 

The SABC would like to place on record that it made a commercially viable offer that would enable the SABC to deliver football matches to South African audiences on SABC platforms and this offer was rejected by SAFA. This follows the expiry of the previous contract between SAFA and the SABC. On the previous contract there were obligations and milestones which the SABC has met, including the payment milestones of that contract, albeit late given the SABC’s dire financial situation. In this regard, the SABC made full and final payment on the agreement as agreed with SAFA.

SABC RESPONDS TO ALLEGATIONS OF IN-FIGHTING AT UKHOZI FM

Johannesburg –Tuesday, 09 October 2018 – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has noted media reports alleging in-fighting between Ukhozi FM management. The allegations further claim that this in-fighting has destabilised operations and affected staff morale at the station.

The SABC would like to place on record that these allegations are untrue and malicious with the intent to derail management’s focus on key and strategic issues of the station.

UZALO MAKES TELEVISION HISTORY WITH 10.2 MILLION VIEWERS

Johannesburg –Tuesday, 09 October 2018 – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is delighted with the performance of one of its flagship television programmes Uzalo, which is currently being broadcast on SABC1.

As at the end of September 2018, Uzalo has broken all records in the history of television viewing in South Africa, by reaching a massive number of 10.2 million viewers. This makes Uzalo the most watched television programme by far.
