{"id":8354,"date":"2021-09-17T16:37:32","date_gmt":"2021-09-17T16:37:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sabc.co.za\/sabc\/sabc\/?p=8354"},"modified":"2021-09-17T16:37:32","modified_gmt":"2021-09-17T16:37:32","slug":"media-statement-sabc-celebrates-the-history-and-culture-of-the-xu-and-khwe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sabc.co.za\/sabc\/media-statement-sabc-celebrates-the-history-and-culture-of-the-xu-and-khwe\/","title":{"rendered":"MEDIA STATEMENT &#124; SABC CELEBRATES THE HISTORY AND CULTURE OF THE !XU AND KHWE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Platfontein-Friday, 17 September 2021 <\/strong>\u2013\u00a0 The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) radio stations will unite to celebrate XK-FM\u2019s 21 years in radio and to keep the heritage of the !Xun and Khwe\u00a0 alive during heritage month, and beyond.<br \/>\nStarting Monday September 20<sup>th<\/sup> through to 26<sup>th<\/sup> September, six (6) African Language SABC radio stations will carry a 3-5min simulcast broadcast of XK-FM at various points throughout the day.\u00a0 This exposure is designed to give listeners an opportunity to hear and learn more about the !Xu and Khwe languages and culture.<br \/>\nBoth digital and on\u2013air crossings will take place on Motsweding FM, Munghana Lonene FM, Ukhozi FM, Tru-FM, Ikwekwezi FM and Umhlobo Wenene FM.\u00a0 The radio platforms will also showcase XK-FM&#8217;s digital banners and audio translations of typical phrases in !Xu\u00a0 and Khwe languages.<br \/>\nXK-FM is the only radio station in the country that supports the! Xu and Khe languages of the indigenous San people.<br \/>\n\u201cXK-FM is one of the SABC\u2019s most prized possessions\u201d says Northern Cape Regional Operations Manager Refiloe Maraka. \u201cIt truly is the lifeline of the community it serves in Platfontein.\u00a0 The station is a prime example of the value that the SABC brings to its listeners as it entertains and informs and perhaps even more importantly, preserves the languages and heritage of our most marginalized and vulnerable communities\u201d he adds. \u201cWe encourage listeners across the country to take this opportunity to learn a phrase or two and use it when they come and visit our beautiful region.\u201d<br \/>\nXK-FM\u2019s maiden broadcast on 18th of August 2000 was launched from a stationary container in Schmidt&#8217;s drift in the Northern Cape.\u00a0 The hours of operation at the time were 06:00 to 13h00 which is a far cry from today\u2019s schedule which broadcasts for 15hrs a day in both languages from its current home in Platfontein.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nFor the complete schedule of the times of the live crossings to XK-FM from the various radio stations visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sabc.co.za\">www.sabc.co.za<\/a><br \/>\n#SABCHeritage2021<br \/>\nEND<br \/>\n____________________________________________________<br \/>\n<strong><u>About SABC<\/u><\/strong><br \/>\nThe South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is South Africa\u2019s only public service broadcaster, established 85 years ago, in 1936.
