Johannesburg, 17 July 2023<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 After 23 years on air, SABC 2 and Danie Odendaal Productions announces that the long-running\u00a0popular soapie 7de Laan will not be recommissioned for another season when season 24 comes to an end in December 2023.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0brainchild of Danie Odendaal,\u00a07de Laan\u00a0made its debut\u00a0on\u00a0SABC 2 on\u00a04 April 2000, bringing to\u00a0life\u00a0much-loved\u00a0characters\u00a0such as\u00a0Oubaas, Hilda, Charmaine, Aggie,\u00a0Emma,\u00a0and the Meintjies family who all became household names.<\/p>\n

7de Laan\u00a0focuses on the lives of residents staying in and around the community of 7de Laan in the suburb of Hillside.\u00a0Originally presented in Afrikaans only, the show has gone through many transformations reflective of a changing society through the introduction of various dynamic characters, storylines and languages from other races and cultures, reflecting the rich diversity of our country.<\/p>\n

7de Laan certainly made its contribution in assisting South Africans make the transition to a democratic state by dealing with issues such as inter racial and homosexual relationships. Over the years it has also dealt with many social ills including gender-based violence, drug addiction, kidnappings and human trafficking. Many South Africans have also learnt to speak Afrikaans because of 7de Laan by listening to the language and reading the English subtitles.<\/p>\n

In its trophy cupboard sits many awards that 7de Laan has won throughout its life span including the\u00a0South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) in the categories of Best Soapie\u00a0and was\u00a0voted as the Most Popular Soapie\u00a0in the Royalty Soapie Awards this year\u00a0and\u00a0Outstanding Female Villain\u00a0award won by\u00a0Deirdre Wolhuter\u00a0for her portrayal of Mariaan Welman.<\/p>\n
