The Walter Sisulu University says it has received nearly 40 000 applications but only has space for 7 500 students.

The Free State province has received the highest matric pass rate at 88.2%, a 6.6% increase from 2015. The pass rate excluding progressed students was even higher at 93.3%.


The total number of candidates who registered for the November 2016 NSC examinations is 828 020.

The national matric pass rate has increased from 70.7% in 2015 to 72.5% in 2016, with progressed learners included. Without progressed learners the percentage sits at 76.2%.
