SABC commits to children's hospital
Johannesburg, Thursday, 30 May 2013 - The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Trust (NMCHT) and the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) signed a memorandum of understanding that will see the SABC utilising its numerous broadcast platforms to create awareness for the fundraising efforts of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital.
The Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital is a unique initiative as it is being built with the support of donors from across the globe, in honour of the former President Mr. Nelson Mandela. A total of R1billion is needed to make the hospital a reality, and every citizen and organisation in the world is being called upon to assist.
“We are delighted to announce a formal partnership that will see the SABC generate significant awareness for the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital fundraising requirements, and contribute to the building of this much needed paediatric facility for the children of Southern Africa,” says SABC CEO Lulama Mokhobo.
The Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital will be a 200-bed world-class dedicated children’s hospital that will serve children in Southern Africa. As Nelson Mandela’s living legacy, it will ensure that no child is refused healthcare due to inability to pay or because of inadequate capacity.
“All children in Southern Africa need care, especially those most vulnerable. In most cases, proper medical care is simply not available to them. This is a very serious problem, “says Sibongile Mkhabela, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Trust.
“The hospital will address a great need as there are only four hospitals in Africa to serve nearly 450 million children. Millions of these children suffer from life-threatening illnesses and have little or no chance of receiving the specialised care they need. ”She reiterated that the nation, and indeed the global community, needs to come together to make sure that this hospital, Madiba’s wish, comes true.
