SABC3: Special Assignment - 9 Nov 2010
| Monday 8 November 2010 13:00
In this episode of Special Assignment, we take you into the heart of rural Zimbabwe where rural women living with HIV/AIDS fight poverty and stigmatisation on a daily basis.
Of the 1, 6-million Zimbabweans with HIV, 55% are women. Some statistics say that 40% of all those infected are unaware of their status and that there are 2 000 HIV-related deaths in Zimbabwe every week. In addition, about 25% of children in Zimbabwe are orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDS-related deaths. In the face of these grim statistics, it becomes difficult to remember that living with HIV means exactly that – living. This documentary shows how a group of HIV+ women took control over their lives and their health – through playing soccer.
Positive Ladies Soccer Club introduces an inspiring initiative by rural women who against all odds are fighting for recognition and against stigmatisation.
This week's programme is produced by the Doctors Without Borders and will be aired on Tuesday the 9th of November - broadcast on SABC 3 at 20:31pm.
