SAfm in partnership with the Gift of the Givers foundation for the Flood relief Campaign  |  Wednesday 2 March 2011 13:40

The rainy season came with the misfortune & devastation for hundreds of South Africans. It left a vast number of South Africans homeless & destitute. Scores of poor families had their lives disrupted immensely because floods that continue to ravage the world including the southern parts of Africa.

In response to this; SAfm has been running a Flood relief Campaign called "Do Your Part" in an effort to provide relief to severely affected families. The South African Public was requested, by the station, to sms the word “FLOODS” followed by their names to 38722 to donate R 10 to the flood victims of South Africa.

South Africans have really stepped up to the call and poured out their support via the smses and some even went further by contacting the SABC via Touching lives to make extra donations in the form of blankets, linen, clothes and some other contributions, for this the SAfm team is eternally grateful.

One of the major organizations that heard SAfm’s plea is the Gift of the Givers foundation, an NGO which has been in existence for 19 years and is the largest disaster relief organization of African origin.

SAfm, together with Gift of the Givers, have joined hands in an effort to bring relief to the South African flood victims situated in the township of Alexandra in Gauteng, just a stone’s throw away from the plush suburb of Sandton on the 3rd March 2011. The event will be held at Phutaditshaba, a community centre that assists residents of Alexandra affected by the floods.

SAfm will host a 7 hour live broadcast live from this township, while visiting all the affected areas. The station is taking the morning talk show host Siki Mgabadeli as well as the afternoon talk show host Karabo Kgoleng to engage the nation in a debate on issues affecting the citizens of South Africa as well the residents of Alex Township, especially the ones affected by the floods, who reside close to the Juskei River.

This initiative forms part of the efforts in bringing more clarity and understanding to a wider South African Audience on the importance of showing Ubuntu and assisting when there is a need. This drive will bring more awareness, to more South Africans, of the extent of damage to property and the severity of these natural disasters.

While talking to Siki Mgabadeli on SAfm, the Chairman of the Gift of the Givers; Doctor Imtiaz Sooliman alluded to the fact that South African are a very generous people, kind hearted and they are an Ubuntu inspired nation. Unfortunately they seldom see the benefits of the money and the goods that they give. SAfm, with this 7 hour broadcast in Alexandra Township, will ensure that we keep the nation informed and inspired.

SAfm and the Gift of the Givers foundation have invited and will be joined by various stakeholders to benevolently:

• Feed at least 2000 individuals at the Alex Township that are bearing the brunt of poverty

• Donate at least to 500 household hygiene packs containing: Domestos, Washing Powder, Sunlight Liquid, Vaseline, Shampoo, handy Andy

• 500 food packs

• 500 sweet packs

• 500 clothing packs

This initiative has attracted the attention of big organisations like BP, Old Mutual Foundation, Telkom Foundation, Liberty Life Grads 2011 & Spectron Electronic respectively and SAfm would like to express sincere gratitude to these organizations for opening their hands and assisting the nation.
