SABC and J4Joy Foundation handover two houses

More lives continue to be uplifted though the SABC's Touching Lives initiative. Two families realised the meaning of absolute philanthropy when SABC together with J4Joy Foundation, Lehumo Consulting, Emakhazeni Municipality and other partners delivered two complete houses at Machadodorp. The community of Emthonjeni Township converged at the handover site on Wednesday the 22nd of January 2014 to witness the total transformation of the lives of the Zitha family and Calvary family, the most recent beneficiaries of the SABC’s unstoppable drive to empower those in need. Provincial General Manager of SABC Mpumalanga, Mr Quinton Lenyai said that the corporation is working hard to better the lives of the less fortunate in society.

This gesture though far from addressing the 200 thousand housing backlog faced by the Mpumalanga Department of Human Settlements, is a glimmer of hope for the Zitha family. A family of 11 that has only ever lived in a small mud house that deteriorated near disintegration posing a danger to the entire family with each night they spent in it. Their misfortune did not only lay with shelter, they also faced the struggle to make their living place conducive for one child living with a physical disability as well as another who is deaf. The Local Municipality intervened to aid the family with regards to the disabilities.

The Calvary family endured similar conditions as the Zitha family, as 66 year old Mr Sani Calvary who lives with two orphaned boys under his care has lived in a small shack all his life. He was overjoyed by this great gesture and said, "I am just happy that for the first time in my life there will be a proper roof over our heads when it rains."

The Zitha family received a three bedroom house while the Calvary Family received a two bedroom house. Both houses are furnished with beds and wardrobes as well as a kitchen unit and stove/food warmer. More work is yet to be done to realise the goal of total citizen empowerment. The partnership that the SABC enjoys with j4Joy Foundation aims to achieve greater objectives. J4Joy Foundation founder Mr Jacob Mnisi said, "We encourage others to do the same and change the lives of the needy, we are doing this to help the poor."
