Wanga from burns to beauty  |  Thursday 9 March 2017 09:06

Johannesburg – Wednesday 08 March 2017, The SABC Foundation is proud and honoured to have been part of the ‘WANGA FROM BURNS TO BEAUTY’ Campaign, an element of which took place at Life Fourways Hospital yesterday, Tuesday 7 March 2017. The campaign seeks to assist Wanga, an 8 year old burn victim from Midrand, and bring awareness around cases of shack fire victims.   The SABC Foundation played a key role in mobilising all the role players including specialist doctors based locally and abroad to participate pro bono.  The Foundation also mobilised the donation of the theatre and equipment for the procedure to be done on Wanga.

In October 2016, Mike Dyoyi from the Keletso Health and Skills Development Centre made contact with the SABC Foundation, requesting assistance for Wanga to get medical treatment. Wanga was burnt a few years ago in her mother's shack.  The request was forwarded to Dr Anushka Reddy who is the Scientific Director at The Cosmetic Medicine Congress of South Africa, who got straight to work in pulling resources together to help the little girl.

SABC Foundation CEO Iris Cupido commented, “What a privilege it was to spend time with Wanga and being part of a life changing experience.  One of the things that Wanga said is that she just wants to be normal and that she doesn’t want to be teased anymore. For us to be a part of this journey was incredible and so amazing.”

She further commented, “A special thank you to Weya Moosa from the SABC Foundation, for taking the initiative to put all the dots together and connected doctors from France, Sandton, Cape Town and Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, and made this treatment possible.  I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the team of selfless doctors, the management of Life Fourways Hospital and Hitech Group SA for their invaluable contribution”,  she concluded.

Wanga will undergo a few more procedures and the committed resources will be playing their roles as agreed.
