Eastern Mosaic Presenters Image

Sunday 12 August 2012

This week we focus on the strength, courage, poise, dignity, compassion and sensuality of women in today’s world.  Throughout this special series, our aim is to showcase life and lifestyle with an eastern connection - and in a South African context.  It’s impossible to do this without acknowledging the indispensable role that women have played in shaping society – even in the face of unyielding patriarchy and entrenched male privilege.  From Coco Chanel to Mother Theresa, from Emmeline Pankhurst to Indira Gandhi and Benazir Bhutto, women have shown that they are leaders and innovators – and in South Africa’s own struggle, who can forget Adelaide Tambo or Dr Fatima Meer?  They helped pave the way for the women of our country today – who are claiming their rightful role as politicians, business people, professionals, thinkers and breadwinners.  Our line-up reflects this celebration of womanhood – proudly sponsored by the SHM Group...

•    Style – PallaviJaikishan - Aaamby Valley Bridal Week: In the West, tradition says that a bride should wear something old and something new, something borrowed and something blue.  In the East, the preferred colour is red – but even the most up-to-date bride-to-be may be eager to inherit or borrow a PallaviJaikishan creation.  To see why, we take a look at her recent nuptial collection...

•    Showcase – Paramedics: The flashing lights of an ambulance will always draw a crowd of onlookers – but nobody really wants to become involved.  There are, however, some dedicated individuals who commit themselves to being there for people in dire need of medical attention – so we find out what it means to be a paramedic...

•    Showcase – DabbooRatnani: DabbooRatnani is one of India’s most sought-after photographers – and his celebrity calendars have become collectors’ items.  A recent feature showcased his 2012 edition – which provoked incredible interest around the world – and among our viewers.  In response to your requests for another glimpse of Dabboo’s gallery, we’ve compiled a montage of female sizzling stars...

•    Jukebox: Priyanka Chopra’s tribute to Asha Bhosle: There’s a unique relationship between actors and singers in Indian cinema – with one profession providing the face to the other’s voice – and vice-versa.  Screen stars are acutely aware of the contribution made by vocalists to the success of their movies – and this was acknowledged in spectacular fashion when Priyanka Chopra paid tribute to Asha Bhosle at the IIFA Awards in Toronto...

•    Showcase – Presenter Search Regional Finals – Cape Town: The Mother City may have a reputation for being laid-back – but there was nothing easy going about the Presenter Search regional finals in Cape Town.  The candidates were focused while the panel was constructively critical – as you’ll see in this week’s round-up...

•    Showcase - HemaVallabh: South Africa is facing a shortage of engineering skills – but Eastern Mosaic has encountered a dynamic young woman with a double-barrelled approach to the problem.  By day she’s a process engineer – and then after hours she encourages girls to take up a career in engineering.  We introduce you to HemaVallabh...

•    Jukebox: AishwaryaRaiBachchan – IIFA Awards Performance: It certainly doesn’t seem to have had any noticeable effect on her figure, but AishwaryaRaiBachchan has found motherhood to be a rewarding experience – and she’s very hands-on when it comes to taking care of her baby.  No doubt all you moms raising kids, holding down a job and keeping a household together will rejoice at the news – so we take a look at a role in which Aishwarya has always excelled – and that’s being a superstar performer, on screen and stage...

•    In Focus – Westcliff Flats Residents’ Association: Access to clean water and sanitation may seem to be a basic human right – but for many Chatsworth residents this has only become a reality thanks to a prolonged struggle by civil society organisations – often led by women.  Orlean Naidoo of the Westcliff Flats Residents’ Association unpacked the key points in the story – in this in focus feature, brought to you by Chatsworth Centre – forming the heart of the community...

•    Money Matters – Financial advice for women: With women becoming increasingly active in the economy, financial institutions are beginning to recognise their importance as clients – and that they usually present a lower credit risk.  This week, Money Matters offers financial advice for women – proudly brought to you by the SHM Group of Companies…….
