Social Investment

The role of the national public broadcaster extends beyond broadcasting, beyond the mandate to inform, educate and entertain. South Africa's national broadcaster also has a duty to invest in the community, and contribute to its upliftment and development. The SABC is committed to extending its sphere of influence to social investment initiatives, and fulfils these functions through radio and television programmes, in areas removed from the field of broadcasting, and in the pursuit of business. Fundamental to selection of a project are its impact and sustainability; the depth and spread of the positive consequences, and whether it has a clear agenda of benefiting the community at large. In support of key issues emanating from the national agenda, the main areas of focus for the SABC, and examples of the SABC ' activities and initiatives in each during the last financial year (2004), are as follows:
