South Africa is known as "the protest capital of the world" on the free online encyclopaedia, Wikipedia,  with the country sporting the highest rate of public protests in the world today.

The rate of protest has been escalating since 2004. However, according to political analyst Steven Friedman the current wave of protests stretches back to the 1970's.

The rate rose dramatically in the first eight months of 2012 as 540 protests were reported in Gauteng province between 1 April and 10 May 2013.

Police brutality in South Africa also continues to be under the spotlight after four people were killed following a protest over water shortages.

In the latest incident, one person was killed in Roodepoort's Durban Deep. The list seems a long and continuous one.

To strike a balance between the right to live and the right to strike or protest we are joined by Senior Africa Researcher at Human Rights Watch, Africa Division, Dewa Mavhinga.
