DA faithfuls celebrate Cape Town victory

DA supporters have begun celebrating the party's election victory in the Cape Metro in front of the Artscape in the CBD. The DA is leading with about 60% of the vote in the Metro, while the ANC has about 30%.

Provisional results for the metro are only expected to be released later today. Analysts say the recounting of votes in about 20 voting districts in Khayelitsha is unlikely to make a significant impact to the DA's outright majority in the Cape Town Metro.

The DA has also secured an outright victory in 15 municipalities. The ANC has managed an outright victory in only one municipality.

The Institute of Justice and Reconciliation analyst, Kate Lefko-Everett says: We've seen that the DA has already achieved an outright majority in the Cape Metro. I also think that it's not unusual that there are going to be some exceptions and recounts in an any election. But for the most part the public has high trust in the IEC, and we've seen in the past elections that most of these democratic processes have gone very smoothly.

Meanwhile, smaller political parties in the North West have performed poorly in this week's local government election. These include the Freedom Front Plus and the United Christian Democratic Party.

Political analysts and observers have attributed this to limited resources as well as political infighting within such parties.

We have seen the United Christian Democratic Party electing a new leader and the new leadership. Secondly within the Freedom Front there is also different view points. We have seen the older generations thinking about people like Pieter Mulder and Pieter Groenewald and so on and then we have younger generations new thinking about politics, some of have already defected to solidarity and so on, says political analyst from the North West University Professor Andre Duvenhage.
