Twenty students have been arrested following violence at the Walter Sisulu University in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape. Police spokesperson Mzukisi Fatyela says they were arrested yesterday afternoon for public violence and damage to property.

A student also died after falling off the roof of a building. Officials say chaos erupted after students blocked the entrance to the campus and threw stones at the police who responded by firing rubber bullets to disperse the protesters.

We regret the death of the student

The campus has been closed until further notice. Walter Sisulu University spokesperson Angela Church says academics have condemned the violence.

''Students gathered on the roof at the residences and other University buildings to watch the proceedings. Regrettably one student died after falling off the roof of a building. We regret the death of the student and it’s a very very sad day at the University when a young student is sacrificed in a violent situation. So we extend our deepest sympathy to the family and the University is in mourning about the loss of the young life," says Church.
