Metro FM has confirmed that popular radio personality Eddie Zondi has passed on. He was rushed to hospital after complaining of chest pains early Monday, but died on the way.

Zondi worked at Metro FM for more than 18 years.  He presented the Romantic Repertoire on Sundays between 3 and 6pm.

Station Manager Martin Vilakazi confirmed the news on air a short while ago.

Metro FM communications manager Happy Ngidi says they're in shock.

“All of us are still trying to process it because we have lost a stalwart, a seasoned broadcaster who has made such a huge contribution in the industry. It will take us a long time to deal with his sudden departure. Not only is it a loss for Eddie’s family but it is a loss for South Africa at large. We've really lost a legend.”

Zondi was 47 years-old. He leaves behind his wife Phakamile Zondi.
