Gauteng's Human Settlements department is working with Home Affairs to get locals RDP houses. This follows a devastating fire at a hijacked building in downtown Johannesburg.

The 10-storey building will be remembered for all the wrong reasons. It was ravaged by an inferno that claimed seven lives on Wednesday. There has been resistance by many who don’t want to leave the area. After being evacuated some were moved to a place of safety nearby but others are dissatisfied.

“I am not going there, I will just start my own life, and I’ll just start a new life, “said one disgruntled local.

"It become difficult for us to help them permanently in terms of the products that we produce as human settlements like RDP houses, because if you are not a South African the only way you can be helped is if you have documents to be in this country, it means you must find rental accommodation somewhere" said Gauteng MEC of Human Settlement, Paul Mashatile.
