The North West provincial government has decided to halt some of its programmes and channel the money towards creating skills for the youth in the villages, townships and small towns.

Premier Supra Mahumapelo made the announcement at the three day skills development lekgotla in Potchefstroom this week.

He says youth with skills have power to create the much needed jobs for the economy, as the country is dogged by high unemployment rates especially among the youth.

Mahumapelo says skills development among the youth is essential.

“We are also going to be taking the EPWP program and change it completely. Rather than it focusing on cleaning, refuse removal and so on. We are going to identify over 20 000 young people, so that we develop necessary skills, through EPWP, that the economy requires, but also help these young people to become entrepreneurs. We are happy that the private sector here in the province, has agreed to work with us. We've already spoken to the national government, they are also saying their programs will now be modeled around the villages, townships and small dorpies.”
