ChildLine has raised concern about an alarming upward spiral in teenage pregnancy. ChildLine's Naomi Dube says Limpopo has the highest number of teenage pregnancies at 17% of the teen population, closely followed by the Northern Cape and Free State on 15%.
Dube says girls as young as 12 engage in unprotected sex in the Northern Cape after consuming alcohol. Dube indicates that there is a peak in alcohol abuse in the Northern Cape during the festive season. She says the situation with teen parents is a concerning one as their bodies are not yet fully-developed to assume that responsibility.
Last week was Pregnancy Awareness Week
Last week was Pregnancy Awareness Week and the emphasis has been on making good pre-natal choices to ensure a healthy mom and baby. Operations manager for Storks Nest Mother and Baby Wellness Clinics, Sharlene Swart, said Netcare hospitals around the country will host workshops and talks to empower women to make healthy choices before, during and after pregnancy.
Swart highlighted that this year’s focus is on mothers' choice. We want to empower moms to make informed choices. There's so much available to moms out there and it’s imperative we as the medical staff give moms all the information they need. We have 37 maternity facilities nationally and everyone of them will be having mini workshops where there’ll be exhibition tables with all services and products."
