Rhoo Khumalo Harris Mkhwanazi has been charged with murder and attempted murder.
Supporters staged a protest outside court.
On Wednesday last week, Mthembeni Shezi was shot whilst attending an ANC meeting at a school in Welbedacth. Two other people were seriously wounded when two men opened fire on the meeting.
Police made a break through on Friday.
The accused was found in possession of a homemade handgun. The gun will be taken for ballistics to ascertain if it was used in the killing.
Outside court today, there was a show of support for the victims. The motive for the attack is unknown at this stage.
“It is a great concern. These deaths are happening all over KwaZulu-Natal and comrades outside KwaZulu-Natal are asking us about what is happening in our area,” says ANC regional chairman, Dr. Sibongiseni Dhlomo.
He says they do not know why people have such a desire to bring evil into society.
The case has been adjourned until October 8 and the suspect will remain in police custody.
