In an aim to keep the girl child in school during their menstrual cycle, the Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal has invested over R60-million to buy and distribute sanitary towels to female pupils.

Over 950 000 girls in the province, benefit from the free pads programme.

To mark Global Menstrual Hygiene Day celebrated on the 28th of May, the department visited a school in Pietermaritzburg to distributed sanitary towels.

Education Department MEC Mthandeni Dlungwane says since they started this initiative last year, they have noticed a significant drop of absenteeism amongst female learners.

Dlungwane says learners in rural areas were sometimes forced to miss school during their periods due to either lack of sanitary pads.
