A teacher is presumed dead after flash floods hit parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

His car was washed away by a flooded river in Nquthu. Scores of people have been displaced as a result of the floods.

The heavy rains are causing severe flooding.

It's believed the 40 year-old teacher was trying to cross a bridge when his vehicle was swept away.

The search for the teacher has been halted following more downpours. On the north coast, homes were flooded in Esikhawini, leaving thousands of people displaced.

One of the community members of the affected area says: “We did not sleep last night our home was full of water. We can’t even go to work, because everything is wet.”

More than three hundred people are being accommodated in a community hall.

Mayor of Umhlathuze, Mduduzi Mhlongo says: “Disaster teams have been dispersed to the affected areas."
