The trial of Sibusiso Langa, accused of killing five joggers, is expected to start in the Pretoria High Court today. Langa, a mechanical engineer, was allegedly drunk when he ploughed his Mercedes Benz ML500 into the group of joggers on October 23, 2011.

The runners were preparing for the Soweto Marathon. Four women and a man were killed. Another man was hospitalised with critical injuries.

During Langa's last appearance on May 11, in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court, the prosecution said Langa faced five counts of murder, one of attempted murder and charges related to drunk driving.

He was granted R80 000 bail in October. As part of his bail conditions, Langa, who is also a US citizen, had to surrender both passports, and his driver's licence.

According to an affidavit handed to the court during his bail application, Langa would not oppose the charges.
