Youth voting for DA's policies - Maimane

Thursday 13 September 2012 16:39

DA national spokesperson, Mmusi Maimane said the Democratic Alliance Students' Organisation's (DASO) victories in some universities is an indication that the youth are voting for the party's policies. He was addressing Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University students ahead of SRC elections.

The DASO won the SRC elections last year after the university's South African Students' Congress leadership for several years.

Maimane says: "It signals the fact that South Africans are able to choose parties on the basis of policies rather than anything else. Even at any level where an election is contested, it is important. Secondly it matures democracy. We cannot arrive at national elections and hope it will all work there, while it is not working on other structures. So universities become key points to show us that young people, who are a key constituency in the country, symbolise for us as a country that we can be able to entrench democracy."

DASO promotes the DA’s vision of the open opportunity society for all and gives students a chance to play a role in the preservation of liberal democracy in South Africa.
