Two men have been charged for impersonating police officers and the possessing unlicensed ammunition. But one of the men is understood to be a policeman stationed at OR Tambo International. The other is believed to be a soldier based at Centurion in Pretoria.

There was a lengthy delay in the Polokwane Magistrates Court during which the magistrate threatened to release the suspects. The pair was arrested on Wednesday after allegations that they were tailing Capricorn District Mayor Makgabo Mapoulo.

Provincial ANC Youth League leaders attended the court proceedings. It is alleged that Peter Mthombeni and Phillip Nkuzana were intimidating some ANC members in Polokwane. But charges and the police docket were presented after a long delay. This irritated the attorney for the accused.

Defence Attorney Jack Makgoba questioned why the charges were only prepared in the afternoon.

He said they also needed the men to identify a third suspect who allegedly fled the scene before the arrest

Makgoba says he is surprised that Nkuzana - thought to be a policeman at OR Tambo police station in Ekurhuleni - could be charged with impersonating police. He says the State does not have a case.

Investigating officer William Baloyi, however, testified that the police needed more time to profile the suspects. He said they also needed the men to identify a third suspect who allegedly fled the scene before the arrest.

The case has been postponed to February 13 for a formal bail application.
