KwaZulu Natal remains the province with the highest number of new HIV infections in the country and possibly the world.

That's according to a study conducted by the South African Medical Research Council (MRC) looking at the HIV hotspots in the province and the country.

Details of the study have been discussed at the HIV Research for Prevention Conference in Chicago, in the USA.

Professor Githa Ramjee from the MRC says they are conducting the study in women from Tongaat, Isipingo, Verulam, Botha's Hill, Umkomaas and Chatsworth.

She says Botha's Hill and Tongaat are the two worse affected.

"I can't even compare to the world, compared to the rest of Africa or even in SA, KZN is the biggest hotspot for HIV. So new infections are happening between 5% and 10 % (per annum) now that doesn't even happen in a sex worker population outside the country," says Ramjee.
