Former Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has asked South Africans to recapture the state through active citizenry.

Since his ousting four months ago, Gordhan has used various platforms to encourage South Africans to mobilise against state capture.

Addressing business leaders in Umhlanga, Gordhan urged them to actively participate in exposing corruption.

He described state capture as a disease. He stressed South Africa was not for sale, adding citizens needed to guard the country's sovereignty.

In June, Gordhan said South Africans should stop making negative comments so that confidence improves in the country.

He was reacting to a decision by Standard and Poor's (S&P) to keep South Africa's credit rating unchanged.
