Cosatu has rejected the revised toll fees announced in the budget. The Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan says treasury will capitalise R5.8 billion of the debt for constructing the highways.  Road users will have to pick up the balance of the tab.

However, the tolling system will be capped at R550 for cars.  The Transport Minister Sbu Ndebele warned that compliance will be enforced legally.

Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi insists workers should not foot the bill. He says the protest march is on track for next month.

"5.8 concession to pay the rest not good enough. The strike continues on the 7th of March and we probably will have another strike by the 30th of April the day that he says they will start introducing or enforcing this e-toll gate in Gauteng and we will not compromise we just don't have an extra R500 to pay." Vavi says.

Vavi says "E-tollgates" - at a cost of R550 per month would set a bad example as he predicts that similar tolls would be introduced throughout the country.
