African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) Treasurer General Pule Mabe could emerge as a challenger for the League's presidency during an elective regional conference at Klerksdorp in North West this weekend.
Mabe is due to give the keynote address to the ANCYL in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District. League president Julius Malema has been expelled from the ANC, although he's appealing the expulsion. Mabe however, earlier denied he was campaigning for Malema's position.
Spokesperson for the Youth League in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District, Wisley Kgang, says it should be on record that they respect disciplinary processes of the ANC, they subscribe to its constitution and code of conduct and that they will never question, at any given time, a process that should unfold in the ANC.
Kgang says until Malema arrives at the conclusion of his expulsion matter, they would definitely be left with no choice but to start to prepare for any new leadership. He also stressed that they believe in Mabe as their next president, but also as the League’s incumbent treasurer general.
Earlier in the week, the ANCYL's legal team said it will, on Wednesday, lodge an appeal against Malema's expulsion from the ruling party. The appeal will be lodged with the ANC's appeals committee, chaired by Cyril Ramaphosa. Malema was expelled by the party's national disciplinary committee while League spokesperson, Floyd Shivambu was suspended for three years.
