Congress of the People (COPE) says it is ready for its first elective national conference to be held at in Boksburg this weekend. The party's provincial structures and the youth movement concluded their conferences on Sunday.

They discussed policy positions and leadership preferences. So far Mosiuoa Lekota looks set to retain his position as party president. This after all the nine provinces indicated that they would back him for the post at the conference.

COPE spokesperson Johan Abrie says, “Lekota is an exceptional and very popular leader. Indeed a number of provinces have declared their support for him. We don't want to predict outcomes, and we also don't want to push the names of any particular candidate.”

“If anybody feels like he or she wants to contest Mr Lekota, that person should feel free to do so and to come and do that as a representative of a branch or a structure this coming weekend in Johannesburg,” adds Abrie.
