Police are hunting for a gang of three armed men who shot dead two police officers in Vereeniging last night. The officers were responding to a house robbery when they were gunned down. It brings to three the number of officers shot in Gauteng this week alone.

What started as a routine patrol ended in an ambush that cost two officers their lives.  Jerry Govender and his family, were accosted in their driveway. Three armed men took them inside their house and ransacked it.

"They said keep quiet, don't scream, cover the kids so they don't scream. I opened a blind and saw a police van coming slowly up the street as they do. When I saw the police van we broke the door and ran out to get help. They shot my brother in the leg and he went back in the house, then they killed the two cops. They shot one in the head and one in the chest."

Warrant Officer Mohagi and Constable Chakela didn't even have time to draw their weapons. An eyewitness says the police were dragged out of their van and the shooters drove off in the van.

The men escaped with household goods, two R5 rifles and 9mm pistols. They abandoned the police van and hijacked another vehicle. Police are still searching for them. Police have appealed to anyone with information to come forward.
