Nearly 300 people have been left homeless following shack fires in the Joe Slovo informal settlement on the Cape Flats.

Firefighters in Langa have extinguished the fires. Disaster risk management spokesperson, Wilfred Solomons-Johannes, says no one was injured in the incident.

Several fire engines and emergency services personnel were dispatched to the area.

Solomons-Johannes says the cause of the blaze is being investigated.

“The investigation will take a day or two but, under normal circumstances, we have found that the common cause of the occurrences are incidents of negligence where people leave open flames unattended,” says Solomons.

He says that other causes of the devastating fires in Cape Town include electrical stoves or electrical appliances not being switched off as well as flammable open flames that have not been extinguished.
