The weather has improved significantly in most parts of the  Eastern Cape and across the rest of the country after two days of heavy rains and snowfall. The extreme weather conditions left a toddler dead in Mthatha.

The three year old girl died when the house she and her mother were in collapsed on them due to the rain yesterday. Her mother escaped with minor injuries. A farmer, Fritz Myburgh  is still missing after his bakkie was swept away while crossing the Kouga bridge in Kareedouw.

His wife, Poppie, managed to climb out through a window and hang onto a rock until she was spotted.

Meanwhile, rescue officials in the province are looking forward to the improved conditions today after a number of vehicles, especially trucks were left still trapped in the snow at Barkly Pass on the R58 and Penhoek Pass on the N6 yesterday.

Officials said their priority was to get people out of the snow to places where they could get a warm meal and a blanket and worry about the vehicles later. Weather forecasters have warned of more rain over the weekend.
