The SANDF was deployed to Alexandra on Friday night to help contain the situation.
The protesters had gathered outside the local magistrate's court where 31 people were supposed to appear for allegedly torching IEC offices in the area.
They barricaded roads with burning tyres outside the Madala hostel.
The police's Neville Malila says, "The situation in Alexandra is calm. The violence has been brought under control. We have arrested 59 people overnight for public violence and they will appear in the Alex magistrates court on Monday."
