Twelve people have killed in a accident at the intersection of Houtkop and Boy Louw in Vereeniging. A truck and a bus collided head on, leaving both vehicles with extensive damage. Thirteen people were on board the bus and there was one occupant in the truck at the time of the accident.
Ten of the occupants died due to serious injuries even before medical personnel had arrived at the scene. Three were still trapped in the wreckage, while another lay trapped underneath the vehicle.
ER 24's Vanessa Jackson says, "We don't actually know what caused the accident, but there were reports that both vehicles actually crossed over the intersection and this led to the extensive head on collision."
Jackson says two people came out of the accident alive and were taken to hospital by ambulance for further care. Local police authorities will be conducting the necessary investigations into the cause of the crash.
