Minister of Home Affairs Naledi Pandor said on Thursday that they will be handing ID Smart Cards to various South African democratic leaders and to those who have laid the foundation for South African democracy in the Union Buildings.
Pandor says: “All of us in government, as South Africans, we are saying the arrival of this Smart ID Card is really part of that continuous step towards building a democracy, towards honouring our freedom.”
Pandor says they chose to hand the ID Smart Card on Mandela Day to honour former president Nelson Mandela.
Sophia De Bruyn, one of the leaders who marched against apartheid pass laws in the Union Buildings on August 9, 1956, says, “The new ID Smart Cards gives us back and restores our dignity and gives us our identity.”
Former president Thabo Mbeki also received one of the first smart ID cards. –Edited by Sthembiso Sithole
